POPLARVILLE, Miss. - The Hinds Community College Football team scored 17 unanswered points on Thursday evening to take down the Pearl River CC Wildcats 24-21 in overtime.
Tanner Hollingsworth connected on a 39-yard field goal in overtime to secure the come from behind victory.
In the opening drive of the game, the Wildcats marched down the field to take a quick 7-0 lead five minutes into the first quarter. Late in the first the hosts added another touchdown as the Wildcats took the 14-0 advantage.
Early in the second quarter,
Roman Mula connected with
Michael Lott in the endzone for the 23-yard touchdown pass to get the Eagles on the board. The Wildcats extended their lead to 14 points midway through the second quarter as the score remained 21-7 at the halftime break.
Coming out of the halftime break, the Eagles went 73 yards on 13 plays as
Jerrell Boyd finished the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run to cut the lead to seven points. Both defenses played well for the remaining of the third quarter, but the Eagles had the ball on the 2-yard line as the horn sounded to end the 3
rd quarter.
Jerrell Boyd scored his second rushing touchdown of the game on the opening play of the fourth quarter. On the next possession, the Wildcats drove the ball down the Hinds' 20-yard yard line to attempt a 34-yard field goal, but the kick was wide left as the score remained 21-21 with 11:17 left in regulation. Both offenses were trying to milk the clock, but the Wildcats had control of the ball and with three seconds remaining in regulation the Wildcats missed a 43-yarder to send the game into overtime.
The Eagles won the coin toss to start the overtime period but elected to play defense. On the third play of overtime,
Vernorrius Chaney picked off Hullette in the endzone to give the Eagles the ball.
Tanner Hollingsworth sealed the 24-21 victory for the Eagles on fourth down as he drilled the 39-yard game winning field goal.
Roman Mula led the offense going 17-for-26 with 223 passing yards, 48 rushing yards, and one passing touchdown.
Ja'Marian Johnson totaled 38 rushing yards, while
Jerrell Boyd finished the night with 33 rushing yards and scored two touchdowns.
Macardi Johnson led the receivers with two catches for 66 yards, while
Michael Lott caught the touchdown and totaled 63 receiving yards. The Eagles finished the game with 390 total offense (223 Passing yards and 167 Rushing Yards).
On defense, the Eagles were led my
K'Swaya Moffett Jr. with eight solo tackles and three assists for a total of 11 tackles in the contest.
Branden Jennings finished the game with eight total tackles with a sack and a TFL.
Jeremy Evans concluded the contest with seven total tackles, two TFL, and a sack.
Vernorrius Chaney was credited with the only interception in the game was had a pass break up.
Tanner Hollingsworth led the kicking game with five punts with the longest being 44 yards and dropped two inside the 20-yard line. Additionally, he made all three PAT's and kick the game winning 39-yard field goal in overtime.
The Eagles will return to action on Thursday, October 5 against Jones College in Ellisville. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM.
