Marsala’s Walk Off Grand Slam Seals Doubleheader Sweep Over MGCCC

RAYMOND, Miss. – The Hinds Community College baseball team picked up a crucial doubleheader sweep over Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College to keep the playoff hopes alive on Wednesday at Joe G. Moss Field. The Eagles' bats were on fire in game one as they took the 20-5 run-rule victory and came from behind in the second game with a walk off grand slam to seal the 7-5 win in the nightcap.
 
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Eagles erupted for six runs in the bottom of the first inning to take the early advantage. After a scoreless second inning, the Bulldogs belted a gram slam in the top of the third to cut the lead to 6-4. Hinds grabbed two more runs in the bottom of the fifth before exploding for 12 runs in the bottom of the six to take the commanding 20-4 lead going into the seventh inning. MGCCC scored one in the seventh, but the damage was already done as the Eagles took the 20-5 run-rule victory in seven innings. 
 
Brice Ainsworth led the Eagles offense going 3-for-5 at the plate and tallied four RBI in the contest. Tyler Janos, Diego Maddox, and Kaleb Lipscomb had three RBI apiece in the game. Ashton Johnson and Thomas Marsala grabbed a pair of hits in the first game of the doubleheader. Ryan Herbinson got the start and the win on the mound for the Eagles. The Flowood, Miss native went 6.0 innings, gave up seven hits, and posted four strikeouts in the contest. As a team, the Eagles scored 20 runs on 15 hits and did not commit an error in the game.
 
In the second game of day, the Bulldogs jumped out to an early advantage with a run in the first and three runs in the second to take a 4-0 lead after two innings of play. The Eagles plated two runs in the third and one run in the fourth, but the visitors still held the 4-3 advantage after four complete innings. The Bulldogs added a run in the fifth to take the 5-3 lead going into the sixth. After a scoreless sixth inning and top of the seventh, the Eagles loaded the bases for Thomas Marsala and he blasted a walk off grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Eagles the 7-5 victory in game two and earn the sweep on the day. 
 
Thomas Marsala led the Eagles in game two going 2-for-4 from the plate with both hits being homeruns. Additionally, he scored two runs, and posted five RBI. Cameron Hill and Kaleb Lipscomb also had multiple hits in the game, while Ashton Johnson, Tyler Janos, and Brice Ainsworth tallied a hit in the ballgame. Lincoln Sheffield got the start on the mound and earned the no decision on the mound. Alex McGarrh closed the contest for Sheffield in relief and earned the win. As a team, Hinds scored seven runs on nine hits and did not have an error in the game. 

Hinds will return to action on Saturday against Itawamba for the final home doubleheader of the season and it will also be Sophomore Day. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 2 PM.
