ELLISVILLE, Miss. – The Hinds Community College Football team dropped a south division contest with Jones College by a final score of 31-21 on Thursday night. With the loss, Hinds moves to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in south division play.
Hinds opened strong, with quarterback
Jaylon Ruffin tossing a perfect 14-yard touchdown to
Jaiden Turnipseed to take the early advantage. But Jones College answered quickly when Ky'Yon Harris punched in a 5-yard touchdown, tying the game. Momentum shifted briefly as Jones drilled a field goal but then came one of the night's biggest moments when Ruffin broke free and sprinted 79 yards for a touchdown, putting Hinds back in front, 14–10. The Bobcat running back Harris scored again, followed by Jevarion Glover and CJ Rush, each finding the end zone to give Jones a commanding 31–14 lead.
Late in the fourth quarter, Hinds showed they weren't finished. Ruffin, capped a gritty drive with a 1-yard touchdown, cutting the deficit to 10. Time ran out before Hinds could complete the comeback.
Jaylon Ruffin's performance with two rushing touchdowns, a passing touchdown, and 425 yards of total offense was the highlight of the night.
Jaylon Ruffin had a fantastic performance, throwing for 284 yards and one touchdown while rushing for 141 yards and added two more scores. He was tough to bring down, averaging 8.8 yards per carry.
Braishun Forbes was his top target and led the receiving corps, hauling in seven catches for 91 yards and a 24-yard touchdown. Hinds' offense was well-balanced, with strong support from
Geron Johnson and
Julius Bradley on the ground.
DJ Miller and
Nehemiah Taylor also contributed key receptions.
Defensively, the Eagles racked up 79 total tackles in the hard-fought contest.
Jermar McCarter led the charge with 10 Total Tackles, while
Kevin Beckham added nine and
Jalen Owens recorded eight tackles and a quarterback hurry.
Caleb Bryant notched the team's only sack, combining with others for five tackles for loss.
RJ Hall and
Travis Lan each added pressure with shared tackles behind the line.
Hinds will return to the friendly confines of Gene Murphy Field at Joe Renfroe Stadium for homecoming on Thursday, October 16
th against Southwest Mississippi Community College. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM.
