No. 9 Hinds Eyes Championship Berth in Showdown at No. 5 Gulf Coast

RAYMOND, Miss. — Two losses to open the season. Six consecutive victories. One opportunity to play for a championship. For No. 9 Hinds Community College, the road to the MACCC/Region 23 Championship runs through Perkinston on Thursday night, where the Eagles will square off against No. 5 Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in one of the most significant games of the 2026 conference football season.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at A.L. May Memorial Stadium, with much more than bragging rights on the line. Hinds (6-2, 4-0 MACCC South) enters the contest alone atop the South Division standings and can clinch a berth in the November 5 MACCC/Region 23 Championship with a victory. Gulf Coast (7-1, 3-1), meanwhile, must win its remaining two regular-season games to capture the division crown.

For the Eagles, Thursday represents an opportunity to do something they have accomplished only twice in the last 10 meetings: defeat Mississippi Gulf Coast. After falling to Itawamba and East Mississippi to begin the season, Hinds has responded with six straight victories under second-year head coach Chris Jones. The Eagles have found their rhythm on both sides of the football, developing into one of the MACCC's most dangerous teams.

Hinds leads the conference in scoring at 34.9 points per game, powered by quarterback Jaylon Ruffin, who leads the MACCC with 20 touchdown passes. Ruffin has been the catalyst for an offense that has scored 194 points over its last four games, averaging an impressive 48.5 points per contest during that stretch.

The Eagles are coming off a convincing 38-13 Homecoming victory over Copiah-Lincoln, a performance in which Ruffin threw for 216 yards and four touchdowns while adding another score on the ground. Running back Makari Bodiford rushed for 132 yards, while the Hinds defense delivered one of its strongest performances of the season, limiting the Wolves to just 180 total yards while recording six sacks and two interceptions.

That defensive pressure has not gone unnoticed by Gulf Coast.

While Hinds enters riding a six-game winning streak, Gulf Coast finds itself looking to rebound from its first loss of the season. The Bulldogs, previously ranked No. 2 nationally, dropped to No. 5 following a 31-20 defeat at East Central last Thursday. Despite the setback, Gulf Coast remains one of the nation's premier programs, averaging 32.3 points per game and bringing a 7-1 record into the matchup.

The Bulldogs have also had the upper hand in this rivalry in recent years. Thursday will mark the 90th meeting between the programs, with Gulf Coast holding a 54-34-1 advantage in the all-time series. The Bulldogs have won eight of the last 10 meetings, including four consecutive victories dating back to 2022.

Hinds' most recent victory over Gulf Coast came on September 23, 2021, in one of the most memorable comebacks in program history. That night, the Eagles faced a fifth-ranked Gulf Coast team and fell behind 31-3 before mounting a remarkable comeback. A late touchdown pass from BeSean McCray to Tabashi Thomas completed the rally, giving Hinds a stunning 42-37 victory in Raymond.

Five years later, the Eagles once again find themselves facing a Gulf Coast team ranked fifth nationally, with an opportunity to produce another defining moment.

But this time, the stakes extend beyond a single upset. With the MACCC eliminating its traditional semifinal playoff round for the 2026 season, the North and South Division champions advance directly to the conference championship. Thursday's winner will control the South Division race heading into the final week of the regular season. For Hinds, a victory would remove any remaining uncertainty, securing the division championship and a place in the November 5 title game.

For a program that began the season 0-2, the opportunity speaks to the determination and growth of a team that has steadily improved throughout the fall. The Eagles have already shown they can respond to adversity. They have demonstrated they can win on the road, produce explosive offensive performances, and create game-changing plays defensively.

Now comes their biggest challenge. Hinds has spent six consecutive weeks fighting its way into championship contention. On Thursday night, the Eagles have a chance to turn that momentum into a championship opportunity.
