PERKINSTON, Miss. - The Hinds Community College men's basketball team delivered a thrilling performance Saturday afternoon, defeating Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College 104-101 in overtime at Dantzler Arena to advance to the Region 23 Tournament semifinals.
Hinds leaned heavily on a historic performance from sophomore guard Daveon Henry, who poured in a season-high 43 points to lead the Bulldogs in the win-or-go-home matchup. Henry was dominant from start to finish, shooting 14-of-26 from the field, knocking down three three-pointers, and converting 12 free throws while also adding five assists and five steals in 39 minutes of action.
The Bulldogs found themselves trailing 40-36 at halftime, but responded with a strong second half to keep pace with the Bulldogs from Perkinston. Hinds outscored MGCCC 54-50 in the second half to force overtime tied at 90-90.
In the extra period, Hinds executed down the stretch, outscoring Mississippi Gulf Coast 14-11 to secure the three-point victory and keep their postseason run alive.
Several Bulldogs contributed key performances alongside Henry. Abubakar Cham finished with 12 points and eight rebounds, while Austin Ratliff recorded a double-double with 10 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Terrance Clark also added 12 points off the bench, and Andre Stewart chipped in 10 points, knocking down three three-pointers to provide a spark for Hinds.
With the victory, Hinds advances to the Region 23 Tournament semifinals where the Bulldogs will face #1 seeded Itawamba Community College in Fulton. Tipoff is scheduled for Tuesday, March 10 at 6 PM.
