Trajan (TJ) Johnson

Trajan Johnson is a native of Memphis. Graduated from Hinds Community College, the University of Southern Mississippi, and the University of South Dakota. 

He served as an athletic trainer at Hinds Community College in 2017. He began his coaching career at the University of Southern Mississippi as a volunteer coach, working alongside Jon Stuart and Jamaal Barnes from 2020 to 2022. During this time, he contributed to back-to-back Conference USA Women's Indoor Championship titles in the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 seasons.1st place finish indoor High Jump Covrell Todd 2.22m (2022). Notably, Octavia Cato (11.51) qualified for the 100m, and the women's 4x1 relay team qualified for the NCAA Regional meet twice, finishing 18th in 2021 and 15th in 2022. The men's 4x4 relay finished 21st in 2021 and Elijah Miller (10.24) qualified for the 100m.

In 2022, Trajan transitioned to the University of South Dakota as a graduate assistant coach, working with sprints under coach Tevaskie Lewin. His contribution helped the team secure both men's and women's titles at the 2023 Summit League Indoor Championship, highlighted by a 1st-place finish for Erin Kinney in the women's 60m (7.27) and 1st and 3rd-place finishes by Dylan Kautz (6.64) and Ardell Inlay (6.79) in the men's 60m. Jacy Pulse took 1st place in the women's 400m (54.48), and the men's team swept the 200m event. That same year, his athletes qualified for regionals in the women's 100m and the 4x100 relay.

Now in his fourth year of coaching, Trajan has expanded his role to include managing both cross-country and track weight room responsibilities. In the 2024 season, he helped lead South Dakota to its second Summit League Indoor men's title. During the Summit League Outdoor Championships, both Jaden Guthmiller and Erin Kinney took 1st place in the 100m. Notable 1st place finishes were also achieved by Sara Reifenrath in the 200m and 400m. His athletes continued to excel, with NCAA Regional qualifiers including Jaden Guthmiller (10.31), Erin Kinney (11.22/23.26), Sara Reifenrath (52.55/23.30), the women's 4x4 relay (3:33.15), and the women's 4x1 relay (44.13). 

He has achieved USTFCCCA Strength & Conditioning coaching certification and a total of 10 men and 23 women qualified for the NCAA Regional Meet.
