No. 4 Eagles split conference opener at Pearl River

Alex Gunn (26) moved to 2-1 on Thursday

The Hinds Community College baseball team, the number four team in the country according to the latest National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) poll, opened South division play at Pearl River Community College on Wednesday, and left Poplarville with a split of the doubleheader.

Hinds (16-3 overall, 1-1 in the South) won game one, 6-3, before having its 12-game winning streak snapped in game two by losing a 1-0 heartbreaker.

Pearl River came into Thursday's doubleheader ranked 19th in the country in the NJCAA poll.

Alex Gunn of Clinton, a sophomore pitcher, was masterful for six and one-third innings and recorded the victory on the mound to move to 2-1 on the season.

Tyler Akins of Madison, a sophomore infielder/pitcher, picked up the last two outs and his fourth save for the Eagles. He also had a home run, single and three RBI at the plate in the first game.

Daniel Gilbert of Ridgeland, a sophomore infielder; Chris Jones of Mendenhall, a sophomore outfielder, and Ryno Martin-nez of Vicksburg, a sophomore infielder, all recorded multiple hits in game one on Thursday.

In game two, Kirk Thornton was the hard-luck loser on the mound for the Eagles. The freshman from Flora threw five and two-third innings and allowed only one unearned run and four hits, while striking out three hitters.

The Hinds offense could only muster up five hits in the second game and did not give Thornton enough backing, dropping his record to 1-1 on the season.

On Monday, Hinds played against Millsaps College (JV) in Jackson, and came away with a 7-3 victory.

Andrew Gunn of Clinton, a sophomore pitcher, picked up the win on the mound to move to 2-0 on the season.

Akins and Akiko Thompson of Clinton, a freshman outfielder, each had three hits to lead the Eagles offense.

Hinds will return to South division play on Saturday, traveling to Wesson to take on Co-Lin Community College. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
