Baseball heads into final weekend of regular season

The final week of the 2012 regular season has approached for the Hinds baseball team with the Eagles fighting for a shot at the South division title.

Hinds (29-13 overall, 13-8) will play a doubleheader at Jones County Junior College at 2 p.m. on Saturday, and the two teams will play a single game in Raymond on Monday at 4 p.m.
The single game is the makeup game from a previous rainout on April 3.

Jones is currently ahead of Hinds by one game in the hunt for first place, with the final three games playing a large role in the seeding for the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) state playoffs. Both teams have already clinched berths in the playoffs.

Hinds dropped a doubleheader to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College on Wednesday, falling 2-1 in game one and 9-3 in game two.

Carey Taylor (Brandon), a sophomore pitcher, took his first loss of the season in game one despite a tremendous complete game effort. He is now 9-1 on the season.

Justin Smith (Florence), a freshman catcher, led the Eagles offensively in the opener, going 2-2 with one run scored and one walk.

Smith also went 1-2 with a run scored and an RBI in game two.

Akiko Thompson (Clinton), a freshman outfielder, hit his first home run of the season in the second game to aid the Hinds offense.

John Gault (Shreveport, La.), a freshman pitcher, took the loss on the mound to move to 0-1 on the year.

The Eagles fell twice to Itawamba Community College on Saturday in Fulton. Hinds dropped game one, 4-1, and game two, 6-5.

Thompson drove in the Eagles lone run in game one.

Kirk Thornton (Flora), a freshman pitcher, was the hard-luck loser on the hill in the first game, allowing two earned runs in four innings pitched. He fell to 1-2.

Tyler Akins (Madison), a sophomore infielder/pitcher, finished with three hits and three RBI in the second game to pace Hinds offensively.

Smith and Thompson both had two hits in the second game.

Austin Hartzog (Terry), a freshman pitcher, took the loss to fall to 0-2.
