Carey Taylor (Brandon) threw a complete game gem to help the Hinds baseball team defeat the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Bulldogs, 7-2, and keep the Eagles alive in the Region XXIII tournament in Eunice, La.
Taylor, who allowed seven hits and only one earned run on the day, improved to 11-1 on the season and moved Hinds to 35-17 overall.
Hinds will now play Itawamba Community College at 3 p.m. on Saturday in an elimination bracket game. The winner plays LSU-Eunice tomorrow night at 7 p.m., while the losing team is eliminated.
Tyler Akins (Madison) went 3-3 again to lead the Hinds offense, including a two-run single in the seventh inning to push the game out of reach. The sophomore infielder/pitcher is now 6-6 on the tournament.
Daniel Gilbert (Ridgeland) went 3-4 for Hinds, who finished with 11 hits on the day.
