Eagles move to winner's bracket after win over EC

Matt Jones (6) had three hits in Thursday's 13-4 win

The Hinds Community College Eagles jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and never looked back, defeating East Central Community College, 13-4, in the opening round of the 2014 Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) state baseball tournament on Thursday in Booneville.

Hinds (30-16 overall) will now take on no. 1 ranked Jones County Junior College at 1 p.m. on Friday in the winner's bracket game at Harold T. White Memorial Field in Booneville. The winner of the 1 p.m. game will move into Saturday's tournament championship game.

East Central will now face host Northeast Community College at 10 a.m. on Friday in the loser's bracket game. The winner of this game will face the loser of the Hinds/Jones game at 4 p.m.

The Eagles of Hinds broke a scoreless tie in the second inning when they put up a six spot on the scoreboard, led by doubles from Marshall Boggs (Cleveland) and Matt Jones (Madison).

Jones, the reigning MACJC Player of the Week, led the Eagles with three hits on the afternoon. Chase Lunceford (Clinton) finished with two RBI on two sacrifice flies and a single.

Casey Sutton (Monroe, La.), the reigning MACJC Pitcher of the Week, earned the win on the hill after throwing 6.1 innings and allowed four runs (two earned) to move to 7-2 on the season. Michael Jolly (Mobile, Ala.) picked up the final two outs of the seventh inning without allowing a run.

Derek Martin (Flora) threw two scoreless frames to close things out on the mound and keep the Warriors at bay.

With the win, the Eagles are now assured of a spot in next week's Region XXIII tournament at a site yet to be determined.
