Comeback for the ages keeps unbeaten streak alive

Jonathan Washam (37) had the go-ahead single in Sunday's comeback

The No. 2 ranked Hinds Community College baseball team kept its unbeaten streak alive at 14 games after a comeback for the ages, an eight-run top of the seventh inning, to defeat Itawamba Community College, 8-6, in game two in Fulton on Sunday night.

Hinds (14-0) defeated ICC, 11-8, in game one, and after the doubleheader sweep, now sit at 2-0 in the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC).

The Eagles trailed 6-0 heading into the final frame and the Indians were just three outs away from handing Hinds the season's first loss.

Chase Lunceford (Clinton) led things off with a standup double and after Hinds sent 10 more batters to the plate, it was Jonathan Washam (Sterlington, La.) that delivered the knockout blow, a two-run, go-ahead single that put the Eagles ahead for good by the score of 8-6.

Houston Case (Brookhaven) was masterful in relief, striking out the side in the bottom of the seventh inning to pick up his first save of the season. Trent Driver (Raymond) threw the bottom of the sixth inning and earned his first collegiate win on the mound after the miraculous comeback.

Matt Jones (Madison) finished 1-3 with a double, RBI and run scored in game two, while Lunceford had the aforementioned double and scored two runs to lead the offensive attack.

Casey Echols (Braxton), Jones, Lunceford and Washam each had two hits in Sunday's opener, as the Eagles finished with 13 hits throughout their balanced lineup. Washam led the way with three RBI as well.

Derek Martin (Flora) moved to 3-0 on the mound after throwing five innings in game one and allowing four runs on seven hits.

The Eagles were scheduled to play Meridian Community College on Wednesday afternoon at home, but the doubleheader has now been moved to Monday, Apr. 27 per MACJC policy.

Hinds will return to action on Saturday versus Northeast Community College in a 3 p.m. doubleheader that will be held at Smith Wills Stadium in Jackson.
