Jordan Washam's walk-off HR leads to sweep over NWCC

Jordan Washam (7)

Jordan Washam (Sterlington, La.) hit a  three-run, walk-off home run with two outs and the game tied at four to give the Hinds Community College baseball team a doubleheader sweep over Northwest Community College on Sunday.

Hinds (31-4 overall and 18-4 in conference), ranked No.1 in the country for four consecutive weeks by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), won game one, 12-3, over the Rangers in a doubleheader that was played at Smith Wills Stadium in Jackson.

The Eagles of Hinds trailed Northwest by the score of 4-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning before Chase Lunceford (Clinton) and Marshall Boggs (Cleveland) each reached base via hit batter and base on balls, respectively, with two outs.

Jonathan Washam (Sterlington, La.) then stepped to the plate and delivered an opposite field single that scored pinch runner Trent Driver (Raymond) and advanced Boggs to third base.

With runners now on first and third base, it was Jordan Washam's turn to play hero, and he did just that, sending a J.G. Lipscomb offering over the right field wall that set off a wild celebration at home plate and gave the Eagles a two-game sweep on the day.

Casey Echols (Braxton) added a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning with the Eagles trailing 3-2. The solo shot was the fourth of the season for the sophomore outfielder.

Jordan Washam added an RBI earlier in the contest with a groundout, and Lunceford added the other RBI with a sacrifice fly.

Austin Sanders (Madison) threw the final 2.1 innings and finished with three strikeouts and allowed one earned run to get the win and move to 3-0 on the season. The hard-throwing righty also has nine saves on the year with a 1.48 ERA.

The Hinds bats got going in a big way in Sunday's opener, as the top ranked Eagles gave Northwest right-hander Colt Smith his first loss of the season en route to a 12-3 victory.

Tyler Cox (Brandon) finished 2-5 with four RBI on the strength of a three-run home run and a double in the opener. The home run was the fifth of the year for Cox.

Echols and Matt Jones (Madison) each had two RBI in game one, with Jones picking up two hits as well.

Boggs and Jonathan Washam both had two hits and Lunceford added a solo homer, his sixth of the season, to add to the attack.

Randy Bell (Woodville) earned the win in game one after he went 7.1 innings and finished with six strikeouts, one walk and three runs (two earned) allowed, while scattering eight hits.

He is now 8-0 on the season with a 2.38 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 53 innings pitched.

The sweep on Sunday of Northwest came on the heels of the Eagles losing twice to Southwest Community College at Smith Wills on Thursday afternoon.

Hinds lost game one, 5-3, before falling in game two, 8-4.

Cox and Quade Smith (Brandon) had two hits in the opener, and Jordan Washam had a three-run home run, but it was not enough, as the Eagles suffered just their third loss of the season.

Graham Ahlrich (Madison) took the loss on the mound to fall to 1-1 on the season. He threw a total of one inning and allowed the go-ahead run to score for Southwest.

Echols, Kyle O'Keefe (Madison) and Jordan Washam each had multiple hits in the nightcap versus Southwest, but as in game one, it was not sufficient enough, thus giving Hinds loss number four.

Casey Sutton (Sterlington, La.) dropped to 4-1 on the season, despite throwing six innings and battling out of numerous jams throughout his outing.

Hinds will return to action on Wednesday, hosting Jones County Junior College at 3 p.m. at Joe G. Moss Field in Raymond.
