Eagles beat Northwest to move to MACJC title game

The No.1 ranked Hinds Community College Eagles baseball team defeated No. 20 Northwest Community College, 6-1, on Friday afternoon to stay unbeaten and advance to the championship game of the 2015 Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) state tournament at Joe G. Moss Field in Raymond.
 
The top ranked No.1 Eagles (40-5) will take on the winner of the East Mississippi/Northwest contest that is currently still taking place. The MACJC state title game will start at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
 
East Mississippi defeated Meridian Community College, 12-2, to move to tonight's elimination game with Northwest. With the win, the Lions of East Mississippi are assured a spot in next week's Region XXIII tournament in Eunice, La., while the Eagles of Meridian are finished for the 2015 season.
 
Quade Smith (Brandon) led the way offensively for the Eagles, going 2-3 with two walks and a run scored.
 
Matt Jones (Madison) and Jordan Washam (Sterlington, La.) each had two hits and an RBI and run scored to aid the six-run Eagles attack in the second inning and lead them to a convincing victory over Northwest (31-14).
 
Marshall Boggs (Cleveland), Tyler Cox (Brandon) and Casey Echols (Braxton) each picked up an RBI, while Chase Lunceford (Clinton) added a double.
 
Derek Martin (Flora) earned the win on the mound after throwing four innings in relief and allowing two hits and striking out three, while not allowing a run to cross. The sophomore right-hander is now 6-0 on the season.
 
He came on in relief of Houston Case (Brookhaven), who got the no decision after going four innings and allowing one hit and one earned run while striking out two Ranger batters.
 
Austin Sanders (Madison) threw a scoreless ninth inning to preserve the win and move the Eagles to Saturday's championship game, where the winner of the East Mississippi/Northwest contest will have to beat the Eagles twice to claim the title.

Stephen Sexton led the way for Northwest against Hinds, going 3-4 with the lone run scored.

As mentioned, East Mississippi soundly defeated Meridian, 12-2, in Friday's early game, thus ending the season for the Eagles of MCC.
 
Dylan Vuncannon was a perfect 5-5 with an RBI to lead the Lions, while Blake Key and Kyle Liberto had three hits apiece.
 
Jaylon Keys hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to provide the only two runs on the day for Meridian.
 
Ryan Rigby moved to 3-1 on the season with the win for East Mississippi, while Austin Harrison fell to 5-3 with Friday's loss.
