The Hinds Community College Eagles picked up a 32-28 victory at home at friendly Joe Renfroe Stadium on Thursday evening, defeating Holmes Community College to open the 2015 football season.

Hinds is now 1-0 on the season, while the Bulldogs of Holmes now sit at 0-1.

Tonight's contest proved to be a seesaw affair, complete with a 13-point lead for Hinds, a three-point lead for Holmes and finally a late touchdown for the Eagles of Hinds that led to the four-point victory.

Hinds got on the board first, as quarterback TR Page (Taylorsville) connected with wide receiver Javon Wims (Jacksonville, Fla.) on a six-yard TD pass to put Hinds ahead with 12:19 in the opening frame. The point after attempt was no good and Hinds now led, 6-0.

Defensive lineman Marcus Loud (Houston, Texas) would pick up a fumble recovery deep in Bulldog territory on the ensuing Holmes possession and just a few plays later, running back Brian King (Crystal Springs) would take full advantage of the Bulldogs mistake, as he scampered in from five yards out for the score.

This time the Mason Sollie (Raymond) PAT was good and the Eagles now led 13-0 with 6:44 in the first quarter.

Holmes would cut into the Hinds lead with just six seconds before the half when quarterback Dejerric Bryant connected with A'Darius Brown on a 47-yard touchdown pass. Like the first Eagles touchdown, the point after attempt for Holmes was no good, and Hinds moved into the locker room with a 13-6 lead.

The Eagles would strike first in the second half as well, but this time it was from quarterback Jaquez Parks, who found Wims on a 30-yard touchdown pass with 7:18 to go in the third quarter. The PAT was no good, however, and Hinds now led 19-6.

Page and Parks both split near equal reps at the QB position for Hinds and each was equally effective, as Page was 6-9 for 106 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, while Parks was 6-13 for 63 yards and one touchdown.

Dre Massey found the end zone from five yards out on the next Holmes possession to cut the Hinds lead to 19-13, but Page extended the lead back to 12 when he connected with Marquez McNair (Magee) on a 33-yard pass with just two seconds left in the third quarter to move the Eagles advantage to 25-13.

Holmes, however, would reel off 15 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to jump ahead 28-25 with just over eight minutes to go.

Bryant and Massey hooked up on a 63-yard touchdown strike with 14:50, while Bryant also scored on a one-yard TD run and then found Massey on the two-point conversion to give the Bulldogs a three-point lead with 8:10.

Parks would give Hinds the lead for good with 3:26 left in the contest when he rumbled in from three yards out. The Sollie point after was perfect and the Eagles moved ahead 32-28, a lead that would hold up.

Wims finished with six catches for 107 yards and two touchdowns to lead in the receiving department, while Tyus Raine (Petal) was the team's leading rusher, as he had 12 carries for 69 yards.

Greg Taylor (East St. Louis, Ill.) was the co-leader in the unofficial tackles department for Hinds, finishing with eight tackles to go along with an interception.

Loud was a force in his Hinds opener as well, collecting eight tackles and a sack to go along with the aforementioned fumble recovery.

Hinds will return to Raymond next Thursday, hosting Northeast Community College at 6:30 p.m. in another non-conference matchup at Joe Renfroe Stadium in Raymond.
