RAYMOND- The Hinds Lady Eagles softball freshman outfielder Hannah Wilkerson (Lake) snagged MACJC Player of the Week honors in the first week of the softball season with an impressive offensive and defensive performance.
Â
The Lady Eagles went 3 – 1 in the first four games of the 2019 season facing off against Spoon River College for three games and Copiah Lincoln Community College for one on February 1 and 2 at Renee T. Warren Field in Raymond. In those games, Wilkerson went 5 for 10 (.500 batting average) with one double, one walk, one run scored, and eight runs batted in (RBI) helping her team to their hot start. While behind the plate, Wilkerson threw out three runners attempting to steal second to round off her performance.
Â
Wilkerson's performance along with others has spurred the Lady Eagles softball team to a good start on the year as the team is looking to build off of last year's winnings season which ended with a playoff appearance.
Â
In their third match-up of the season, Wilkerson and her team split their home double header with the Southwest Mississippi Community College Lady Bears on Monday afternoon (Feb. 4) dominating the first game 5 – 0 and dropping the second 0 – 6.
Â
Hinds freshman pitcher
Sydney Davis (Clinton) tossed a gem for the Lady Eagles in game one as she went six innings with six strikeouts in the shutout. Davis' solid pitching performance was backed by good performances at the plate by
Amelia Purdy (Calhoun, LA) and
Madeleine Hart (Kingwood, TX) who each had two RBI in the contest.
Mary Haydon Williams (Flora) also had a good game at the plate snagging two hits and an RBI.
Â
The second game fared much differently for the Lady Eagles as some costly errors and tough breaks behind a solid Lady Bears pitching performance led to the team's second loss on the year making them 4 – 2.
Â
The Lady Eagles will be back in action February 13 to try and snag an early Valentine's Day present with two home wins against Baton Rouge Community College at 3 and 5 p.m. at Renee T. Warren Field in Raymond. The games, like all home softball games, will be live streamed via the Hinds Community College athletics web stream (
