Softball takes two from NWCC

RAYMOND- The Hinds Lady Eagles softball team secured two victories yesterday (April 17) over the Lady Rangers of Northwest Mississippi Community College (NWCC).

Game one featured a good, old fashion pitcher's duel. The only run of the game came on a run scoring single off the bat of Hinds freshman Claudette Galvan (Porter, TX.) in the bottom of the first inning.  For Hinds freshman right-hander Cassidy Rhea (Monroe, LA.) that one run was enough as she threw an absolute gem of a game. Rhea pitched a seven-inning complete game shutout as she scattered four hits and struck out four batters to earn her fifth win of the season which gave the Lady Eagles the 1-0 victory.

In game two, NWCC took an early 1-0 in the top of the first before Hinds was able to score two runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead. In the top of the sixth inning, NWCC answered back scoring two runs to regain a 3-2 lead over Hinds. Hinds would answer right back with four runs of their own to take a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth. That lead would stand as Rebecca Grewe (Flora) pitched a perfect top of the seventh inning to earn her third save of the season securing the 6-3 victory for the Lady Eagles.

Hinds freshman Sydney Davis (Clinton) gave the Lady Eagles another outstanding outing in the circle as she pitched six-innings, allowed just three runs (one earned run), scattered three hits, and struck out seven batters. Her performance earned her, her seventh victory of the season. At the plate, Lady Eagles third baseman Amelia Purdy (Calhoun, LA.) had an impactful return to the lineup as she collected two hits and two runs batted in. Jessica Deming (Olive Branch) also had big day as she collected a hit and two runs batted in of her own.

The Lady Eagles will look to keep their momentum going this Friday, April 19 when they take on Millsaps JV in a double header on the road at Millsaps College. Game times are set for 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
