SUMMIT – Hinds Community College football moved to 3-3 on the season and 3-1 in conference with a 30-24 nail-biter win over Southwest Mississippi Community College Thursday evening.

Right out of the gate, the Eagles set the tone for what would be a dominant first half on all sides of the ball. Jerrell Boyd (Lexington) put the Eagles in prime field position with his opening kickoff return of 50 yards that set the offense up in Southwest territory on their 47-yard line.

Four plays later, Jeffrey Pittman (Taylorsville) found the endzone on a 23-yard carry. Ben Duncan's (Florence) extra point was good, leaving the score 7-0 in favor of Hinds with 13:32 left in the first quarter.

A quick Bear three-and-out put the Eagle offense back on the field, and they went six plays for 71 yards for another touchdown. This score was an 18-yard pass from Ranson Oakes (Raymond) to Michael Lott (Miami, Fla.).

The Eagle defense continued their dominance with another three-and-out, which led to a 40-yard field goal by Duncan, which made the score 17-0 Hinds after one quarter.

Duncan would go on to make two more field goals in the second quarter. His first one of the second quarter came from 27 yards and his second one was from 43 yards. On the night, Duncan contributed 12 points out of the 30 that were scored for the Eagles.

Southwest would grab a field goal as time expired in the first half and the Eagles would head to the locker room up 23-3.

The Eagle's comfortable lead would diminish in the second half as the Bears would score 21 points.

The Bears first score of the second half came on a 33-yard pass which cut the Eagle lead to two scores. The score was 23-10 after the third quarter.

Despite the Bear touchdown, the Eagles would march down the field on the ensuing possession to get a touchdown back. This score came on a six-yard run by Jamarian Samuels (Ocala, Fla.). Da'Vonta Jackson (Greensboro, Ala.) set up the score on a perfectly-executed fake punt that picked up a big first down.

Southwest wouldn't go down without a fight, as they went on to score two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, all within a seven-minute span. With 10:38 left in the contest, Bear quarterback Christopher Roberson connected with Ty Moore on a 15-yard touchdown. The second touchdown came on another pass connection between Roberson and Jeremiah Ratliff. This score put the Bears down six points with only 4:19 left in the game.

Hinds was able to run some time off the clock on a six-play, 30-yard drive that ended with a punt by Duncan that pinned the Bears on their own 19-yard line.

Derick Hunter (Fort Myers, Fla.) picked up a huge sack on the final play of the game that secured the Eagle's 30-24 victory in dramatic fashion.
