RAYMOND – Hinds Community College baseball capped off Alumni Weekend with their second straight sweep after taking two games at home today against Northwest Mississippi Community College.
After getting a pivotal sweep against Meridian Community College Wednesday, the Eagles took game one over Northwest by run-rule 12-2 and won the nightcap 14-7.
Head coach
Dan Rives praised his team's focus in the double-header.
"I was very pleased with our focus today, especially coming off such an emotional win on Wednesday," said Rives. "We swung the bats well and had some big two-out hits that pushed the lead ahead, and our relief pitching from
Mayson Shealy and
Henry Lee in game two was excellent. It was nice to grab two wins on alumni weekend and we appreciate all of the fans that came out to support us."
Game one
The Rangers of Northwest scored their only two runs of the ballgame in the first inning when they hit a two-run homerun. But, Hinds would quickly answer with a two-run homerun off of the bat of
Josh Rodriguez (Belleville, NJ) to tie the game 2-2.
Starting pitcher
Holland Townes settled in nicely after the two-run first and blanked the Rangers during the remainder of the game. Townes would go the distance in the run-rule victory, throwing five complete innings, striking out four and only giving up two hits.
Hinds got back on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning when they put up four runs. The inning started with a
Gentry Tigrett (Brandon) double that scored
Connor Chisolm (Madison).
Vantrel Reed (Vicksburg) then reached on an error to score Tigrett.
Gavin Mink (Olive Branch) then doubled in the final two runs of the inning, scoring
Clay Benson (Monroe, LA) and Reed.
The Eagles would seal the deal in the fifth inning, plating six runs to secure the run-rule victory. The inning started with a Benson walk that scored Chisolm. Then Reed doubled to score Tigrett and
Justin Williams (Madison). A passed ball and a walk by
Clayton Thurman (Vicksburg) would then put the Eagles up nine runs. The ten-run victory was secured on a bases-loaded hit by pitch by Chisolm, and Hinds took game one 12-2.
Game two
The nightcap started off in the same fashion with both squads hitting a two-run homerun in the first inning. The Eagle's homerun came off the bat of
Vantrel Reed.
After a one-run top of the second inning, the game became well in good hands after the Eagles plated 11 runs to take a 13-3 lead. Those runs came on six hits by Hinds.
The Rangers would scratch back a few runs in the third and fifth, but it wouldn't be enough. Hinds would also get a run back in the fifth and win the game 14-7.
Getting the start in game two was
Connor Nation (Madison). Nation would exit after five complete innings of work, giving up seven hits and striking out three in his second win of the season.
Mayson Shealy (Vicksburg) and
Henry Lee (Jackson) would both pitch one inning a piece to close out game two.
