2023 Baseball Season Kicks Off Tuesday

Raymond, MS - The Hinds Community College baseball team, ranked No. 12 in the Collegiate Baseball preseason poll and No. 15 in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) preseason poll, will kick off the 2023 season on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. at Joe G. Moss Field in Raymond.

Hinds, coming off a 30-18 season in 2022 which saw the Eagles compete in the Region XXIII semifinals, will take on John Melvin (La.) University in a doubleheader to lift the lid on the new campaign. Much like a year ago, the Eagles will rely on a large number of freshmen, but also welcome back a crew of veterans that gained valuable experience as rookies.

"Our team has some inexperience in certain areas, but we like our returning sophomores and feel that we have a talented class of newcomers," said Hinds head coach Dan Rives. "We will use the non-conference portion of our schedule to gain the much-needed experience so that we will have a better feel of our club when conference play rolls around."

On the mound, Hinds will rely on sophomores Connor Nation (Madison), Mayson Shealy (Vicksburg) and John David Gunn (Clinton) to shoulder the early load on the mound. All three sophomore hurlers were able to see time on the mound as rookies and are primed for breakout seasons in 2023. Nation, a Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) all-conference honorable mention selection as a freshman, threw 44.2 innings in 14 appearances as a newcomer, where he struck out 44, while only giving up 21 walks. He was 4-1 with a 4.63 ERA on the hill. Shealy ended his rookie campaign in 2022 with a sterling 2.87 ERA in 15.2 innings pitched to go along with 12 strikeouts, while Gunn had 11 strikeouts in as many innings pitched, with only five walks and a 4.09 ERA. The Eagles will also have a number of incoming players who will figure into prominent roles on the staff as well, which will be determined in the early going.

On the position player side, Hinds will look to returners such as Clay Benson (Sterlington, La.), Connor Chisolm (Madison), Cole Smith (Florence) and Dylan Coleman (Madison). Benson, a sophomore infielder, finished his first season in Raymond with a .316 batting average with nine doubles, five home runs, two triples and 25 RBI. Chisolm, a sophomore infielder, had a .317 batting average to go along with seven doubles, two triples, one home run and 14 RBI in his first season. Smith, a sophomore outfielder/pitcher, had seven doubles, one home run and 13 RBI and a .270 batting average. Coleman, a second-year infielder, emerged as a threat in postseason play and finished with a .273 batting average, two home runs, two doubles and nine RBI.
