Softball Looks to Have Successful 2023 Campaign

Raymond, MS - The 2023 Lady Eagles softball season kicks off Monday, February 6, 2023, on the Raymond Campus of Hinds Community College at 2 & 4 P.M against Snead State from Alabama. Head Coach Mike Grzanich is entering his 15th season at the helm of the program and is looking to lead his team to a Region 23 Tournament. "We have a big group of freshmen this year, along with one JUCO transfer. With 14 new faces in the locker room, we must look to sophomore leadership to help us out on the field. It helps when you return your number 1 arm in Kendall Calloway (Canton). She will be able to tote the load in the circle and keep everyone calm on the field whenever she steps foot out there. 2022 everyday starters, Melina Seiferd (Saucier) and Kaitlyn Papizan (Madison) will also be out there to guide these young freshmen."

Hinds Softball does feature its deepest pitching staff it has had in the previous 3 seasons. Sophomores Kendall Calloway and Melina Seiferd do look to carry the majority the innings, but they welcome freshmen arms, Riley Myers (Keithville, LA), Kasey Simmons (Mobile, AL), Kat Smith (Ecru), and sophomore transfer, Avery Parrott (West Monroe, LA). The pitchers' other halves, in the catchers, are led by sophomore Carli Estis (Olla, LA) who looks to build off her 2022 campaign, while leading freshmen Sara Long (Madison) and Haley Shade (Biloxi) behind the plate.

The infield features a load of young athletes, along with sophomore Jaelyn Bass (Purvis). "We are going to be young and raw in the infield. At any time, we could have all four positions occupied by freshmen. Natalie Martin (Biloxi) and Presley Dease (Columbia) have shown a lot of growth here in the early spring, and we look for Gracie Lay (Raymond) and River Boultinghouse (St. Gabriel, LA), who we picked up at Christmas by way of HS graduation, to continue to progress as we enter the early part of the season. Jaelyn Bass is going to find herself in the middle of our lineup as well. She has been a great surprise coming into this year. We hope she brings the power aspect to our lineup."

Drifting back into the outfield, the Eagles continue their introduction of fresh faces. Freshmen Alexis Moran (Gulfport), Makenzie Young (Brandon) and Karson Lowery (Terry) are all looking to solidify their positions as we inch closer to Opening Day. "They're all solid athletes who can cover some ground out there. Throughout these intra-squad scrimmages, they're making my job as a coach tough to make a lineup here in the next week. Which is a good thing when you really look at it. The way sophomore Kaitlyn Papizan has swung the bat in the fall and in the past few weeks, she has earned her spot."

The Lady Eagles schedule features loads of top talent. As of now they are set to take on multiple NJCAA Division I teams and slated to go toe to toe with two Top 10 NJCAA Division II teams in Parkland (IL) and Region 23 foe LSU-Eunice. The Lady Eagles will open up a the grueling MACCC conference play on the road against East Mississippi in Scooba on March 11. Check out the entire regular season schedule
