SCOOBA, Miss. – The Hinds Community College Football team dropped a hard-fought battle on the road Thursday evening, falling just short in a 7-6 contest against East Mississippi Community College. With the loss, the Eagles move to 1-1 on the season.
The game opened with a burst of momentum from Hinds, as
Jaylon Ruffin led a 10-play, 47-yard scoring drive capped by a rushing touchdown. However, the Eagles were unable to convert the extra point, settling for a 6-0 lead. East Mississippi answered early in the second quarter with a quick 6-play, 48-yard drive of their own, followed by a successful PAT to take a 7-6 lead—one that would hold for the rest of the night.
Offensively, Ruffin delivered a standout dual-threat performance, throwing for 200 yards on 22 completions and rushing for 105 yards and the team's lone touchdown.
Geron Johnson added 81 hard-fought yards on the ground, while
Detraun Brown led the receiving corps with 51 yards.
On the defensive side, the Eagles showed toughness and resilience.
Jermar McCarter led the unit with nine total tackles and a critical fumble recovery.
Jeremiah James and
Amarien Bailey added eight tackles each, while T.J. Grant recorded a 10-yard sack.
Kevin Beckham came up with a key interception to swing momentum, but the defense couldn't quite overcome the Lions' early surge.
Hinds will return to action on September 11 for the home opener inside Gene Murphy Field at Joe Renfroe Stadium. It will be our annual First Responders / Military Appreciation game. Kickoff is set for 6:30 PM
