Baseball walks off to conference sweep

Carey Taylor is now 9-0 on the season

Caleb Baucum (Byram) hit a walk-off home run to lead off the bottom of the 12th inning in game one on Thursday to help propel Hinds Community College to a 7-6 victory and eventual doubleheader sweep of Southwest Community College.

Caleb Baucum
Hinds (29-9 overall, 13-6 in the South) would win game two, 8-1, behind a masterful complete game pitching performance from Carey Taylor (Brandon), who moved to 9-0 in his sophomore season.

Baucum, a sophomore outfielder who now leads the team with five home runs, led the way for Hinds offensively in game one, the game-winning homer notwithstanding. He finished 4-5 with two runs scored and one RBI.

Tyler Akins (Madison) came on in relief in the seventh inning of the first game and finished the marathon affair to pick up the victory and move to 5-2 on the season. The sophomore infielder/pitcher threw the final six innings, allowing only five hits and one unearned run.

As mentioned previously, Taylor threw yet another gem to help the Eagles to the game two victory. The sophomore righty threw seven innings and allowed only three hits and one unearned run to remain perfect on the year.

Akiko Thompson (Clinton), a freshman outfielder, finished game two with a triple and a double to go along with two runs from the leadoff spot.

Beau Wallace (Vicksburg), finished 2-4 with two runs scored in the second game after going 2-4 in the first game as well.

On Saturday, the Eagles went to Decatur and came away with a doubleheader split of East Central Community College. Hinds won game one, 6-4, but lost game two, 12-8.

Taylor got the game one victory on the mound by going 5 2/3 innings before turning it over to the bullpen. Akins threw a perfect seventh inning to get his fifth save.

Justin Smith (Florence) hit a grand slam early in the game to give Hinds a lead they would not relinquish. The home run was the second of the season for the freshman catcher.

Akins, Baucum and Thompson all had two hits in the first game.

Chris Jones (Mendenhall) was 3-3 with two RBI and two runs scored in the second game to pace the 11-hit attack. The sophomore outfielder currently leads the Eagles with 37 RBI.

Thompson also had two hits and a RBI in game two.

Hunter Duvic (St. Francisville, La.) took the loss on the mound to fall to 1-1 on the year.

The Eagles, who now have a one-game lead for first place in the South division, will step out-of-conference for the last time on Saturday, as the Eagles travel to Fulton to take on Itawamba Community College. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
