Tyler Akins

The Hinds Community College baseball team (23-7 overall, 7-4 in the South) is currently on a three-game winning streak in the South division after defeating Jones County Junior College, 5-2, in game one of a scheduled doubleheader on Tuesday.

Game two against Jones was postponed due to heavy storms in the Raymond area, and a make-up date has not been set at this point.

The Eagles of Hinds also swept Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College on Saturday to start the winning streak. Hinds won game one, 6-0, and game two, 17-5.

Sophomore Carey Taylor (Brandon) went the distance on the mound in the first game on Tuesday to pick up the win and improve to 6-0 on the season. The righty finished with four strikeouts and allowed only two runs in a stellar performance.

Chris Jones (Mendenhall), a sophomore outfielder, had a two-run double to lead the Hinds offense.

In game one against Gulf Coast on Saturday, the Eagles received another standout pitching performance, this time from Alex Gunn (Clinton). The sophomore lefty threw a complete game shutout and finished with four strikeouts to move his record to 3-2 on the season.

Tyler Akins (Madison), a sophomore infielder/pitcher, was 3-for-4 at the plate to go along with two RBI and two runs scored in the first game.

Daniel Gilbert (Ridgeland), a sophomore infielder, and Akiko Thompson (Clinton), a freshman outfielder, each finished with two hits and a run scored in game one.

Gilbert had three hits to lead the Eagles offense in game two, and Akins followed with two more to highlight big days for the two and three-hole hitters in the Hinds lineup.

Outfielder Caleb Baucum (Byram) and infielder Jacob Thomas (Vicksburg), both sophomores, also had two hits apiece in the second contest.

Nathan Aultman (Mangham, La.) picked up yet another win in relief for Hinds in the second game. The freshman righty improved to 5-1 with his two-inning middle relief stint.

The Eagles return to game action on Good Friday, hosting Pearl River Community College in a South division doubleheader. Game one will begin at 1 p.m. at Joe G. Moss Field in Raymond.
