Baseball splits at Jones

The Hinds Community College baseball team stayed tied atop the South division standings with a 6-2 mark after a split at co-leader Jones County Junior College on Wednesday night.
Hinds (16-11 overall, 6-2 in the South) defeated the Bobcats, ranked number one in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) poll, 4-3, in game one before dropping the nightcap, 6-1.

Chase Lunceford (Clinton) hit a three-run home run in the third inning to give the Eagles the lead, one in which they would not relinquish.

Marshall Boggs (Cleveland) drove in the fourth run for Hinds later in the same inning with a base hit up the middle to provide some needed insurance.

Daniel Briner (Madison) earned the win on the mound with a stellar relief outing, throwing 2.2 innings and allowing only one run and four hits while picking up two strikeouts.

Randy Bell (Woodville) threw a scoreless seventh inning to pick up his second save of the season.

Boggs had three hits (a double and two singles) in the second game, and Matt Jones (Madison) added a triple and single, but the Eagles were unable to push the timely run across and came away with the doubleheader split.

Michael Jolly (Mobile, Ala.) was credited with the loss on the hill, despite throwing 4.1 innings and allowing only two runs and six hits while striking out two batters. He fell to 1-2 on the season.

The split for Hinds followed a doubleheader sweep over South division rival Co-Lin Community College on Saturday in Raymond. The Eagles won game one, 3-2, before winning the nightcap, 7-6, in nine innings.

Toler Robinson (Pearl) delivered the game-winning hit in the opener with a two-run, two-out single through the middle of the field to give Hinds a 3-2 lead and Bell did the rest, throwing a perfect seventh inning for his first save.

Jolly threw the final out of the fifth and then pitched a scoreless sixth inning to get his first collegiate victory in the first game.

Jones finished the opener a perfect 3-3 with a run scored and RBI to lead the offensive charge.

In the second game, it was small ball that provided the heroics, as Boggs laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt that was thrown into the outfield and allowed the Eagles to score the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning. He would finish the nightcap 2-5 at the plate.

Luke Reynolds (Forest) was 3-5 with three runs scored and Brian Mills (Mendenhall) was 2-3 with three RBI and two runs scored to provide support.

Chase Cater (Rayville, La.) threw two scoreless frames in the eighth and ninth innings to earn the win on the bump and move to 1-0 on the year.

Hinds will return home on Saturday, hosting South division member Pearl River Community College in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Joe G. Moss Field in Raymond.
