Baseball defeats No. 1 ranked Jones, 9-7

Marshall Boggs (19) had a two-run single in the six-run fourth inning

The Hinds Community College baseball team moved one step closer to the ultimate goal of a berth in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II World Series by defeating No. 1 ranked Jones County Junior College, 9-7, in the winner's bracket game of the Region XXIII tournament in Ellisville on Friday night.

Hinds (34-18), who also evened the 2014 series at four games apiece with JCJC, will now play in the regional championship game at 6 p.m. on Saturday and will take on the winner of Jones County and LSU-Eunice in the 2 p.m. elimination game.

The win marked the second consecutive game in which the Eagles have defeated a top-two opponent after a thrilling 10-9 victory over Louisiana State University-Eunice on Thursday afternoon.

The Eagles fell behind 2-0 heading into the third inning before knotting things up at two, highlighted by a Caleb Upton (Natchez) double.

Hinds jumped ahead 8-2 on the strength of two singles and six base on balls by the Bobcat pitchers. Marshall Boggs (Cleveland) had the big blow with a two-run single to close the scoring.

Jones County cut the lead to 8-5 in the bottom of the fifth inning before a scoreless frame by both teams in the sixth inning. Hinds pushed the lead to 9-5 in the top of the seventh inning when Quade Smith (Brandon) drove in the Eagles ninth run on a one-out single.

The Bobcats of Jones would make things interesting in the bottom of the ninth inning by scoring two runs to cut the Hinds lead to 9-7, but Austin Sanders (Madison) got a comeback groundball to end the contest and inch the Eagles one win away from a trip to Enid, Okla.

Gage Posey (Brookhaven) drew the start on the hill for Hinds and earned the win by powering through 3.2 innings before turning things over to the bullpen. Michael Jolly (Mobile, Ala.) was tremendous in relief by getting the Eagles through the seventh inning and Randy Bell (Woodville) threw one plus inning and did not allow a run, before turning things over to Sanders.

Tyler Cox (Brandon), Brian Mills (Mendenhall) and Smith each had two hits to lead the Hinds offense.
