Softball hosts ICC today in season opener

The 2015 campaign for the Hinds Community College softball program gets underway today in Raymond, as the Lady Eagles welcome Itawamba Community College to Raymond for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.

The season opener is the first of 10 consecutive home games to start the season off for the Lady Eagles, who will be led once again by head coach Mike Grzanich.

Alexis Patterson (Vicksburg) and Courtenay Holt (Brandon) each had standout freshman seasons in Raymond and look to emerge as leaders of the 2015 club.

Patterson, the Lady Eagles leader in RBI (26), was tied for second on the team in hits (43) and home runs (four) and was in the runner-up spot in batting average (.344) and doubles (eight).

Holt displayed impressive power as a rookie, leading Hinds in home runs (seven) and slugging percentage (.553) and finished with six doubles, one triple and 16 RBI despite missing significant time with an injury.

Hinds will not leave the city limits of Raymond until Saturday, Feb. 21, when the team travels to Goodman for a doubleheader against Holmes Community College and Mississippi Delta Community College.

The Lady Eagles open South division play on Friday, Feb. 27, traveling to Meridian Community College for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
