Baseball splits DH with Northeast

Tyler Cox (16) hit his first HR of the season on Saturday

The No. 2 ranked Hinds Community College baseball team split a conference doubleheader with Northeast Community College at Smith Wills Stadium in Jackson on Saturday, winning game one, 4-3, before falling in the second game by the score of 8-5.

The game two loss was the first of the season for the Eagles, who are now 15-1 overall and 3-1 in the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC).

Randy Bell (Woodville) earned the win on the mound in game one after throwing 6.2 innings and allowing only two runs (one earned). The sophomore right-hander struck out five hitters, walked two and gave up six hits on the day.
 
He is now 5-0 on the season with a 2.57 ERA in 28 innings pitched.
 
Derek Martin (Flora) threw the final two innings and picked up his first save of the season in the 4-3 win.
 
Tyler Cox (Brandon) was 2-4 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored to lead the offensive charge in the opener.
 
Marshall Boggs (Cleveland) and Matt Jones (Madison) each had two hits in game one, with Jones adding an RBI.
 
Cox added a double and an RBI in the nightcap, and Jonathan Washam (Sterlington, La.) had two hits, but it was not enough, as the Eagles lost out on their bid for 16 straight wins.
 
Houston Case (Brookhaven) suffered the loss on the mound after going five innings and allowing seven hits, four runs (three earned) and finishing with seven strikeouts.
 
He is now 2-1 with one save and a 3.38 ERA in 24 innings pitched.
 
Hinds will return to action on Tuesday at home when Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College comes to Raymond for a 3 p.m. conference doubleheader at Joe G. Moss Field.
