The Hinds Community College baseball team, currently ranked No. 1 in the country for the second straight week by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), split a doubleheader with Holmes Community College on Thursday.

Hinds, 25-2 overall and 12-2 in the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC), won game one, 15-1, before falling in the nightcap, 7-6.

The Eagles broke out the bats in a big way in game one, led by two home runs from Tyler Cox (Brandon), who had a grand slam and a solo shot to finish the opening game 2-2 with five RBI and two runs scored.

Marshall Boggs (Cleveland) added a three-run home run and was 2-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.

Matt Jones (Madison) and Chase Lunceford (Clinton) each went 3-4 in the opener to help lead the attack, with Lunceford picking up four RBI in the process.

Derek Martin (Flora) earned the win on the mound after going 5.1 innings in the conference matchup. He improved to 5-0 on the season after scattering five hits and allowing only earned run to score while striking out two hitters.

The Eagles suffered just their second loss of the season in game two on Thursday, as Hinds was held to eight hits, led by Jonathan Washam (Sterlington, La.), who was 2-4 with two doubles and an RBI.

Hunter Austin (Vicksburg) hit a two-run home run to help the offensive cause, but the Eagles were unable to find a hole in the Bulldogs' defense late in the game, and dropped just their 15th game in the last 76 contests.

Trey Jolly (New Albany) took the loss to fall to 0-1. He came on in relief of Casey Sutton (Monroe, La.), who tossed 4.2 innings and allowed only three earned runs.

Hinds returns to game action on Wednesday, hosting Copiah-Lincoln Community College in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Joe G. Moss Field in Raymond.
