Tennis opens 2016 season on Thursday


The 2016 tennis season for the Hinds Community College men's and women's programs gets underway on Thursday, when both teams travel to Ellisville to take on Jones County Junior College at 2 p.m.
 
The Eagles and Lady Eagles will return to the friendly confines of Raymond on Saturday, playing host to Holmes Community College at 10 a.m.
 
Each program enters the season with high expectations, as evidenced by the preseason national rankings from the Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
 
The men's team enters the season ranked No. 24 in the country, as well as No. 8 in the Region III rankings. 

Freshman Chris Crapps (Brandon) enters the preseason rankings as the No. 24 ranked player in Region III singles play, while Crapps and fellow freshman Landon Young (Terry) are listed as No. 14 in Region III doubles play.
 
On the women's side, sophomore Rachel Rhett (Vicksburg) comes into the 2016 season ranked No. 14 in the Region III singles rankings, with sophomore Brittany Weathersby (Ridgeland) coming in at No. 16 and freshman Sophia Slusasz (Brandon) at No. 18.
 
The Rhett/Slusasz tandem is ranked No. 6 in Region III doubles play, while the Weathersby/Rutchelyn Elizar (Florence) duo is listed at No. 14 in the region.
