UTICA- The Hinds Lady Bulldogs basketball team ended their 2019 season last night (Feb. 21) with a 51 – 62 loss against Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College putting them at 6 – 16 on the year.
In coach
Jackie Martin-Glass' first year at the helm of the program, the team saw a strong start to the season posting a three-game winning streak in the early going. The Lady Bulldogs fared well into the Christmas break when they had a one-month lapse in action. However, the team suffered a few key losses in personnel before conference play began which set them back as they began the meat of their schedule.
The season was not without great efforts by the Hinds women's basketball team as they gave their home fans some exciting games in their home gymnasium of J.D. Boyd Gym. On February 4, the Lady Bulldogs nearly pulled-off the upset of then-ranked Jones College losing by two points in the final seconds of the game. On February 7, the team won a revenge game at home against Meridian Community College which saw
Victoria Johnson (Camden) and
Atlantis Thomas (Baytown, TX) post 19 and 17-point games, respectively.
Johnson, who was an All-Region 23 and WBCA All-American selection as a freshman for the Hinds women's basketball program, continued her scoring prowess from the year before as she averaged over 20 points per game for the second-straight season. She also finished in the top 10 in scoring nationally for the second time. Johnson shot at an impressive rate in her scoring efforts as she shot 43% from the field, 34% from three, and over 83% from the free throw line which was good for top 15 in the country in free throw percentage.
Johnson was followed in offensive efforts by sophomore
Nakaylis Washington (McComb) who finished second in scoring and led the team in rebounds while also collected more than one steal per game.
The Lady Bulldogs will certainly be looking towards next season when they plan to launch a healthy attack on the MACJC in Martin-Glass' second season as coach.
