3/22/2021 10:18:00 AM

The Hinds Eagle baseball team ended spring on a high note with a sweep of Northeast Mississippi Community College this past Saturday.

Keeping the Tiger bats at bay in Game 1 was freshman right-hander Caleb Sterling, of Vicksburg, who pitched a seven-inning complete game -- his second in a row -- as the Eagles took the contest, 12-4. He allowed just six hits, one earned run, walked one and struck out five batters. Sterling has allowed just three earned runs in his last 18.2 innings pitched.

Freshmen Tristan Tigrett, of Brandon, and Justin Williams, of Madison, each went 1-for-2 with a double and combined for five RBIs. Freshman outfielder Tyree Carr, of Clinton, went 1-for-3 with a triple and two RBIs.

In Game 2, sophomore outfielder Connor Carter, of Madison, went 3-for-3 for two doubles and an RBI to spark a 13-0 win. Several Eagles who star at multiple positions added key runs as well. Freshman Sean Daily, of Vicksburg, went 2-for-3 with a homer and four RBIs. Freshman Matt Corder, of Madison, went 1-for-2 and added a homer of his own. Sophomore Pablo Lanzarote, of Venezuela, went 1-for-2 with a double and two RBIs. Pitchers Brooks Auger, of Ruston, La., Matthew Taylor, of Southaven, and Holland Townes, of Ridgeland, combined for the shutout victory. Auger allowed just one hit and struck out two. Taylor allowed no runs in one inning pitched and Townes added a strikeout to the team tally.

The pair of wins upped the Eagles' conference record to 9-5 and 11-9 overall. On Thursday, the Eagles split a doubleheader with tenth-ranked Meridian Community College. Game 1 ended 6-5 in favor of Meridian, as Lanzarote added one of two homers for the series and two RBIs and Carter went 3-for-4. The Eagles rebounded to take Game 2, 10-1. Sophomore left-hander Bryce Brock, of Hernando, pitched his second straight complete game and struck out 11 batters, while giving up just two hits. Brock has given up just one earned run and struck out 17 in his last 12 innings pitched. Lanzarote's second homer and Sterling's two RBIs led the way. Freshman middle infielder Vantrel Reed, of Vicksburg, went 2-for-4 with a stolen base.
