RAYMOND – Hinds Community College women's soccer player
Harmony Porter (Ridgeland) has been selected for the inaugural Gray Media Training Center internship program for Fall 2022. Harmony, along with fellow classmate and former Miss Hinds Tiara Jackson, will represent Hinds among the 10 chosen for the training program.
This training, which takes place at WLBT News, helps educate and train the next generation of Mississippi media professionals with an emphasis on students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). This internship will let the students rotate to different departments at the station and give them a chance to complete a student-led newscast upon completion of the program.
"I believe this is a great opportunity for me to go ahead and get my name out there to help me start my career," said Porter. "I knew my interview went well, and I am excited to get started."
Porter is currently a student on the Utica Campus where she set to graduate from the Radio and Television Production and Broadcasting Technology program in December. This program in Utica, under the leadership of instructor Timothy Crisler, helps students prepare for a variety of careers in broadcast media.
When she isn't in the classroom, Harmony spends time on the soccer field, where she is in her second year for the women's soccer team in Raymond. In 2021, she played forward for the Lady Eagles and appeared in six games.
"The commute from Raymond to Utica and back every day for practice and games was hard, but it's nice to see my hard work and dedication paying off with this internship," Porter said.
"Coach Lydia (Sutcliffe) and I are incredibly excited and proud of Harmony for the effort and commitment it took to be chosen as part of the inaugural class at the Gray Media Training Center," said head women's soccer coach
Steve Otto. "We know that Harmony can achieve any goal she sets her mind to."
Upon completion of her degree, Harmony plans to pursue a career in marketing with an emphasis on video content creation.
