Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader with Rend Lake and St. Charles

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MILLINGTON, Tenn. – The Hinds Community College Baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, defeating Rend College 7-0 and St. Charles Community College 4-3 at USA Baseball Stadium. The Eagles improve to 7-2 on the season after the doubleheader sweep. 
 
GAME ONE
 
In the opening contest, the Eagles jump out to 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning after a bases clearing double by Clay Benson and an RBI-Double from Cole Smith that scored Benson from second base. 
 
Neither team scored for the next three innings until Evan McCarthy scored on an error from the pitcher in the top of the fifth inning. In the same inning, Connor Chisolm lined a 2 RBI-Triple to right field to extend the Eagles' lead to 7-0. The Eagles went on to shut down the Warriors to secure the 7-0 shutout.
 
Clay Benson led the Eagles going 1-3 from the plate and tallied three RBI in the contest. Connor Chisolm also went 1-3 at the plate, scored a run, and drove in two runs in the shutout. Cole Smith was the other Eagle to collect an RBI in the game. 
 
Lincoln Sheffield got the start and the win on the mound for the Eagles after tossing 6.0 innings and struck out five batters. Benji Webb came in to close the game and totaled two strikeouts. 

 
GAME TWO
 
In the second game, the Eagles took care of business and earned the 4-3 victory over the St. Charles Community College Cougars. 
 
In the bottom of the first inning, Dylan Coleman opened the scoring for the Eagles that scored Connor Chisolm to take the 1-0 lead. In the same inning, Clay Benson scored on a wild pitch and Evan McCarthy hit an RBI-Single to extend the Eagles' lead to 3-0 after one inning. 
 
St. Charles scratched across their first two runs of the contest in the second inning from an error to make the score 3-2 after two complete innings. After a scoreless third inning, Ashton Johnson hit an RBI-Double to left field that scored McCarthy as the Eagles took the 4-2 lead. 
 
The Cougars scored the final run of the contest in the top of the seventh inning, but Hinds went on to capture the 4-3 victory over St. Charles to sweep the doubleheader. 
 
Offensively, the Eagles were led by Evan McCarthy as he went 2-3 from the plate, scored a run, and registered an RBI. Dylan Coleman went 1-2 in the contest and had an RBI, while Ashton Johnson finished the contest going 1-3 from the plate. 
 
Ryan Herbison got the start and the win on the bump for the Eagles after tossing 6.0 innings and registered two strikeouts. Austin Robinson came in to close the game and earned the save after he struck out three batters.
 

UP NEXT
 
The Eagles will return to Joe. G. Moss Field on Tuesday, February 21 to take on Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College at 12:00 p.m. After a neutral contest at 3 PM, the Eagles will return to the field to take on Itawamba Community College at 6 PM.
