Sheffield and Long Honored with 2024 Eagle Award

RAYMOND, Miss. – The Eagle Award was given to baseball player Lincoln Sheffield and softball player Sara Long during a ceremony with the recipients' families and coaching staff on Wednesday inside Mayo Fieldhouse.

The award is given out each year to the most outstanding Male and Female student-athletes during the past year at Hinds Community College. The head coaches from each sport submit their nominations to the Hinds Athletics Administrative staff to go through and select the award winners.

Sheffield, of Flowood, was the ace on the Hinds baseball pitching staff as he posted a 7-5 record on the bump and tallied 84 strikeouts in 84.1 innings pitched. Additionally, he finished the year with a 3.62 ERA and earned a spot on the All-MACCC Honorable Mention team. In two years for Hinds, Sheffield was 11-9 on the mound with 122 strikeouts in 129.1 innings pitched. During his freshman campaign, the Flowood, Miss. native hit .250 in 28 at-bats and drove in several runs.

Long, of Madison, was the starting catcher for the Hinds Softball team and played in 46 of the 48 games played during the 2024 season. Sara had a team-high 18 doubles on the season. Posted a .352 batting average and earned a spot on the All-MACCC Honorable Mention team. She played in 85 games, totaled 25 doubles and 53 RBI, and posted a career batting average of .343.
