Eagles pick up sweep on Monday

Chase Cockrell (24)

The Hinds Community College pitching staff allowed only one run to cross the plate on Monday and helped the Eagles pick up a doubleheader sweep of Millsaps College (JV) on Monday in Raymond.

The two victories (9-1 win in game one and 3-0 victory in game two) moved the Eagles overall record to 6-6 and completed a stretch of six games in five days.

Hinds played a two-game set with Mississippi Delta Community College (W, 11-2 and L, 5-4) on Thursday, Feb. 25 and traveled to Baton Rouge (La.) Community College (L, 9-8 and L, 8-7) prior to Monday's home doubleheader.

Carlisle Koestler (Vicksburg) earned the victory on the mound in game one on Monday versus Millsaps to move to 2-0 on the season. The Southeastern Louisiana University signee threw four innings and struck out seven hitters and allowed only one walk and one hit.

Chase Cockrell (Bastrop, La.) was 2-2 with two RBI and two runs scored to lead the Eagles offense to the 9-1 win, while Kyle O'Keefe (Madison) had two hits and two RBI on the strength of a two-run home run.

Ryley Balch (Argyle, Texas) and Quinton Logan (Natchez) each added two hits in the first game yesterday.

In game two, it was timely hitting that helped the Eagles prevail to the shutout victory. Cockrell had an RBI triple, Balch had a sacrifice fly RBI and Logan had an RBI single in the fifth inning to give Hinds an insurance run.

Timothy Jordan (Laurel), like Koestler in game one, threw four scoreless innings to grab the win on the mound and move to 1-1 on the season. The Louisiana Tech University signee had four strikeouts and allowed five Majors hits.

Cockrell continued his torrid pace on Saturday against Baton Rouge, going 5-8 with two home runs, four runs scored and three RBI in the doubleheader to pace the Hinds offensive attack.

He was 4-5 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored in the opener and was at the forefront of the 10-hit attack, but it proved to not be enough and wasted a standout pitching performance by Trey Jolly (New Albany).

Jolly, a Mississippi State University signee, went five innings and struck out seven hitters, while allowing only one run and one hit to get the no decision, but the Eagles bullpen could not hold the lead and allowed the Bears of BRCC back into the game.

Brandon Ross (Natchez) took the hard-luck loss on the mound to fall to 0-1, despite striking out the final hitter of the seventh inning, but the BRCC hitter was able to reach first base on an Eagles error that ended the ballgame.

Jackson Mitchell (Brandon) and O'Keefe each had two hits and Cockrell added a solo home run in game two, but Hinds could not overcome the margin and fell in one-run fashion yet again, 8-7.

Adam Jackson (Clinton) was the losing pitcher of record and fell to 1-1 on the year.

The Eagles started off the six-game stretch with an 11-2 victory over Mississippi Delta in a doubleheader that was played at Smith Wills Stadium in Jackson.

Koestler, who picked up his first win of the year after two previous no decisions, was stellar versus the Trojans, as he went five innings and had five strikeouts to only three hits and one run allowed.

Cockrell had three hits and scored three runs, while Will Craft (Hernando) and Logan each had two hits. Logan had a double and three RBI, while Craft had a triple and two RBI.

Balch and Jolly each had an RBI in game two, but Hinds was unable to hang onto an early lead and fell by a single run yet again.

Darrius Wright (Yazoo City) took the loss to fall to 0-1 on the campaign.

Hinds will now head to Birmingham, Ala., on Saturday to take on Wallace State (Ala.) Community College – Hanceville at 11 a.m. and Lawson State (Ala.) Community College at 2 p.m.

Both games will be held on the Lawson State campus in Birmingham.
