POPLARVILLE – The Hinds Community College Eagle soccer team took down the Pearl River Community College Wildcats this past Friday (Sept. 28) 3-1 on the road in Poplarville.
The Eagles came into the game seeking redemption following a 0-1 overtime loss to the Wildcats in the first round of the MACJC playoffs a season ago. The Wildcats entered this match with an 8-1 overall record and the Eagles entered with a 3-3 record.
The Wildcats opened the scoring and took a 1-0 lead over the Eagles just ten minutes into the game. The Eagles, however, quickly responded tying the game at 1-1 when freshman midfielder
Beau Rimmer (St. Stanislaus) found the back of the net in the 15
th minute.
Hinds' sophomore forward
Ian Clendenin (Cleveland) scored what would end up being the game-winning goal in the 27
th minute giving the Eagles a 2-1 lead.
Freshman midfielder Guilherme de Sousa (Fortaleza, Brazil) added an insurance goal when he headed the precision pass from Rimmer past the Wildcat goal keeper giving the Eagles a 3-1 lead.
Sophomore goal keeper
Joey Swinney (Kosciusko) and the rest of the Eagle defense played outstanding allowing just six shots on goal, five of which Swinney saved leading Hinds to the 3-1 victory.
The Eagles improved their record to 4-3 overall with the win and are currently 2-1 in the North division which is good for second place behind Itawamba (8-3, 3-0).
The Eagles will be back on the road this Wednesday (Oct. 3) in Goodman where they will take on North division foe Holmes Community College (2-8, 1-3). The match is set for 7 p.m.
