CHAMLETTE, LA – The 18
th ranked Hinds Community College Eagles swept the Nunez Community College Pelicans this past Saturday (Mar. 16) on the road. The Eagles ran away with game one as they won 11-1 before winning tightly contested game two 3-1.
Harrison Haley (Madison) drew the start in game one and pitched five scoreless innings for the Eagles. Haley allowed just one hit on the day and struck out four batters to earn his third win of the season (3-0).
At the plate in game one, the Eagles pounded out 15 hits including three-hit performances from
Connor Carter (Madison) and
Jovante Dorris (Raymond). Carter also had four runs batted in (RBI) and two runs scored while Dorris scored three runs of his own.
Jake Smithhart (Pearl) and
Luke Clement (Olive Branch) each had two hits and two RBI's apiece. Smithhart also connected for his first homerun of his career. Additionally, freshman catcher
Pablo Lanzarote (Venezuela) smashed his second homerun of the season.
Game two was more of a pitcher's duel as three Eagle's pitchers combined to take a no hitter into the seventh inning.
Matthew Taylor (Olive Branch) drew his first start of his career and pitched two innings allowing no hits, one run, two walks and two strikeouts. Joshua Banes (Learned) came on to pitch three scoreless innings in relief allowing no hits and no runs. Banes also struck out two batters.
Garrett Ramsey (Brandon) earned the win in relief (2-1) as he pitched the final three innings allowing just one hit, no runs, and no walks. Ramsey struck out four batters as well.
At the plate,
Connor Carter added another stellar performance as he went 3-3 including a double.
Luke Clement also had three hits of his own.
CJ Keckler (Biloxi) drove in two runs for the Eagles on a sacrifice fly and a fielder's choice.
The 18
th ranked Eagles (12-3, 0-0) will open up their Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) conference play schedule this Tuesday, March 19 on the road in Summit against Southwest Mississippi Community College (9-6, 1-1). Game one of the double header is scheduled as a nine-inning ball game with a start time of 3:00 p.m. with a seven-inning ball game to follow thirty minutes after game one.
