RAYMOND, Miss. — The Hinds Community College baseball program will host their third annual First Pitch Dinner on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 6 p.m. in the new indoor facility in Mayo Fieldhouse on the Hinds Campus in Raymond. The dinner will feature a Q&A session with former Hinds and MLB standout Chad Bradford, who is a member of the Hinds Community College and Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) Halls of Fame.
"Chad has impacted Hinds in so many ways, from his time here as a star pitcher on the 1994 and 1995 World Series teams, to his stint here as a highly-successful assistant coach from 2013-2015" head coach Dan Rives said. "He will be able to share stories from his playing career, as well as insights on the game of baseball to all those who attend."
Matt Jones, Hinds CC foundation director, will open the evening with an introduction, followed by remarks from Nathan Werremeyer, Hinds CC athletic director. Rives will then give those in the audience a preview of the upcoming season, introduce the 2025 Eagles and then lead the Q&A session with Bradford. There will be a Meet & Greet starting at 6 p.m., and dinner will be served at approximately 6:15 p.m. Tickets are $30 for adults and $15 for children 12 years old and under.
Bradford pitched for Hinds in 1994 and 1995 and led the Eagles to back-to-back appearances in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II World Series in Millington, Tenn. The sidearm righty holds or shares several Hinds records, including games started (17 season, 30 career), complete games, (15 season, 22 career), innings pitched (125 season, 206 career), strikeouts (117 season, 181 career) and most wins in a single season, with 13. He signed with the Chicago White Sox in 1996 after his junior season at the University of Southern Mississippi and made his MLB debut with the Sox in 1998. He later pitched for the Oakland Athletics, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Baltimore Orioles, and Tampa Bay Rays over the course of a 12-year career, one that included seven trips to the playoffs and a World Series appearance in 2008. His career record was 36-28 with an ERA of 3.26. In 2011, Bradford was portrayed in the movie version of the 2003 book "Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game." The book and film centered on the approach taken to building a roster by the Athletics, where Bradford spent four seasons.
After his MLB career ended, he turned to coaching, where he was pitching coach at Central Hinds Academy from 2010-12, then returned to Hinds in the same capacity. In three seasons with Bradford in the dugout, the Eagles were NJCAA World Series runner-up and won the state championship the following year. Also, he coached 20 pitchers at Hinds who moved on to the next level. He is currently the head baseball coach at Central Hinds.
He and his wife Jenny live in Raymond. They have three kids, sons Keller and Walker, and a daughter, Lanie. Like his father, Keller is a former Hinds and USM standout, and now serves as the pitching coach at USM.
