After getting off to a rough start, the Hinds Community College baseball team picked up steam over the weekend, as the Eagles swept Northeast Community College on Friday before splitting a doubleheader with Arkansas Baptist College on Monday.

Hinds will return to action today with a single nine-inning game against Millsaps College (JV) at 4 p.m. in Jackson. The game is a make-up date for the Eagles, who were originally scheduled to take on Bossier Parish (La.) Community College the week of February 11-14, but had multiple cancellations due to the winter weather in the southeastern United States.

The Eagles defeated Northeast, 18-8, in game one before picking up an 18-4 victory in the second game to complete the sweep.

Caleb Upton (Natchez) was a perfect 3-3 in Friday's opener with two runs scored and an RBI, while Brian Mills (Mendenhall) helped carry the offensive load by going 3-4 with two runs scored and two RBI.

Matt Jones (Madison) and Chase Lunceford (Clinton) each had two hits in the first victory on Friday.

Austin Sanders (Madison) got the win on the hill in the first game after throwing three innings.

Marshall Boggs (Cleveland) had an outstanding second game by going 3-4 with six RBI and a run scored.

Mills and Quade Smith (Brandon) each had two hits and two runs scored in the second game to help pace the offensive attack. Mills also hit his first home run of the season in the first inning.

Casey Sutton (Sterlington, La.) was superb in relief, throwing 3.1 innings of scoreless ball to pick up his first collegiate win and move to 1-1 on the season.

Hinds traveled to Cleveland and the home field of Delta State University on Monday to face Arkansas Baptist College in a neutral site doubleheader and won game one, 8-7, on a walk-off single from Lunceford in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Lunceford finished the first game 2-4 (including a triple) with two runs scored and the game-winning RBI.

Randy Bell (Woodville) unfortunately earned a no decision despite allowing only two runs (one earned) in 5.1 stellar innings on the mound.  Derek Martin (Flora) picked up the win in relief to improve to 1-1 on the year.

The Eagles offense could not get going in game two, however, which ultimately ended in a 4-2 loss.

Boggs had a big day in the return to his hometown, picking up three hits on the afternoon.

Houston Case (Brookhaven) was the hard-luck loser yet again, allowing zero earned runs in five innings of work.
