Eagles sweep Northwest to advance to state tournament

Casey Sutton (18) threw his third CG of the season in Friday's 6-2 win

The host Hinds Community College Eagles defeated Northwest Community College by the score of 6-2 on Friday night and beat the visiting Rangers, 10-8, in the first game on Saturday to sweep the best-of-three series in the first round of the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) baseball playoffs.

The Eagles (29-16) will now move on to the MACJC state tournament that will start on Thursday at a site and will play an opponent yet to be determined.

Casey Sutton (Monroe, La.) was tremendous on the mound for Hinds in the opener on Friday night, as the freshman right-hander threw his third complete game of the season and allowed only three hits to the high-powered Rangers offense to move to 6-2 on the season. He struck out five hitters, allowed one earned run and did not give up a single walk in his nine innings of work.

Sutton was aided by an Eagles offense that hammered out 11 hits, led by two home runs and three RBI from Matt Jones (Madison). The freshman second baseman now has six home runs on the season and finished the two-game set this weekend with four hits and seven RBI.

Brian Mills (Mendenhall) also had a big night on Friday, going 3-4 to help pace the Hinds attack. Chase Lunceford (Clinton) and Luke Reynolds (Forest) each had two hits apiece in the series lidlifter.

The Hinds offense continued on the attack in game two on Saturday afternoon, finishing with 14 hits in the nine inning thriller. Reynolds and Caleb Upton (Natchez) each finished with three hits on the day.

Jones, Mills and Quade Smith (Brandon) all chipped in with two hits. Smith got the scoring going when he scored on an RBI groundout by Jones after he reached third on a triple in his first at-bat. The freshman outfielder would later drive in two runs on a clutch, two-out single.

Houston Case (Brookhaven) drew the start on the mound and was solid through four innings, allowing only one run and five hits. The Eagles bullpen faltered in the game's middle innings, but Austin Sanders (Madison) was there to pick up the slack, as the freshman right-hander got the win in relief to move to 7-1 on the season after throwing three innings and allowing only one run to cross the plate.

The Eagles also received significant contributions up and down the lineup, led by Gage Posey's (Brookhaven) first collegiate home run in the fifth inning, a two-run shot to give Hinds a 7-1 lead at the time.

Hinds also played stellar defense all weekend, with the Eagles pulling in many highlight reel plays and turning four double plays in the contest on Saturday.

The bracket for the 2014 MACJC state tournament will be released as soon as the pairings are announced.
