Baseball splits DH at Northeast

Trey Jolly (27)

The Hinds Community College Eagles traveled to Booneville on Saturday to take on Northeast Community College in Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) baseball action and came away with a split of the two-game set.

Hinds won game one, 15-8, and fell by a score of 6-5 in the nightcap. The Eagles now sit at 10-10 overall and 3-3 in the MACJC.

In game one on Saturday, the Eagles offense was led by Ryley Balch (Argyle, Texas), Jackson Mitchell (Brandon) and Hunter Wilson (Brandon), who each had three hits. Mitchell also had three RBI, while Balch and Wilson picked up two RBI apiece.

Chase Cockrell (Bastrop, La.) and Quinton Logan (Natchez) each had two hits as well, with Cockrell hitting a solo home run, which was his fifth of the season.

Trey Jolly (New Albany) moved to 2-2 on the season after getting the victory on the mound in the opener versus Northeast. The sophomore right-hander and Mississippi State University signee went six innings, allowing five runs (four earned) and seven hits, while striking out four and walking only one batter.

The Tigers of Northeast used a furious seventh inning comeback in game two to avoid being swept by Hinds.

Jolly and Logan each had two hits in the second game on Saturday to lead the Hinds offense. Kyle O'Keefe (Madison) had a solo home run and Mitchell had a hit and two RBI, but it was not enough to seal the victory.

Trent Driver (Raymond) was stellar on the hill in game two, but was charged with a no decision. The sophomore right-hander and University of Southern Mississippi signee went six plus innings and finished with nine strikeouts, zero walks and only two runs allowed (both earned), while allowing only five hits.

Colin Coates (Nesbit) got the loss on the mound and fell to 0-1 in the process.

The Eagles also traveled to Meridian on Wednesday, March 16 and fell twice to the Eagles of MCC. Hinds lost game one, 14-4, and fell 3-1 in game two.

Jolly was the leading hitter in both games at Meridian, going 2-4 with a run scored in game one and 1-3 with a double and run scored in game two.

Carlisle Koestler (Vicksburg) took his first loss of the season in game one to fall to 3-1 on the campaign.

Logan was solid in his start in game two, going four innings and allowing only two runs and five hits, while striking out four hitters and walking only two. The Hinds offensive output was not enough, however, and the freshman left-hander dropped to 1-1 on the year.

Hinds will now head to Biloxi on Wednesday to take on Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College at 4 p.m. at MGM Park.
