BSB Celebration victory over PRCC

Eagles score two comeback victories in conference play

Hinds baseball celebrates Acy Owen’s walk-off hit vs. PRCC

The Hinds Community College baseball team used a pair of come from behind victories over the previous week and have now won seven of their last eight contests.

The Eagles swept Pearl River Community College, 8-5 (game one) and 5-4 (game two) on Tuesday, April 5, and split a doubleheader at Holmes Community College on Saturday in Goodman to move to 18-14 overall and 10-6 in the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC).

Hinds fell in game one, 13-7, at Holmes before overcoming a 5-1 deficit in game two to come back and win, 8-6.

In game two versus Pearl River on April 5, Acy Owen (Brandon) delivered a walk-off single in the ninth inning to plate Trent Driver (Raymond), helping Hinds prevail after trailing 4-2 heading into the seventh and final inning.

Chase Cockrell (Bastrop, La.) got the seventh inning started with a leadoff double and was driven home by Quinton Logan (Natchez) to cut the Pearl River lead to 4-3.

After another Hinds baserunner reached, Donte Peters (Columbia) would deliver a perfect sacrifice bunt to move the Eagle runners to second and third, but the Wildcats throw was off the mark and allowed Colin Coates (Nesbit) to score the game tying run.

The Eagles would not score another run in the inning, however, and the game moved into extra innings, where Carlisle Koestler (Vicksburg) was highly efficient out of the Hinds bullpen, throwing two scoreless innings to grab the eventual victory.

Ryley Balch (Argyle, Texas) reached base with two outs and no one on in the bottom of  the ninth inning and was relieved on the basepaths by Driver, who would score the game winning run when Owen's single found the middle of the field and caused a raucous celebration out of the Hinds dugout.

Owen and Hunter Bell (Vicksburg) each had four hits in game two versus Pearl River, while Logan had three hits of his own.

In the opener versus the Wildcats, it was Adam Jackson (Clinton) who set the tone, as the freshman left-hander threw five scoreless innings and allowed only two hits before turning things over to the Eagles bullpen.

He got the win on the hill to move to 2-1 on the 2016 season.

Will Craft (Hernando) had two hits, while Owen had three RBI to lead the 10-hit attack in the game one victory.

In Saturday's opener at Holmes, it was Landry Newsom (Farmerville, La.) who provided the offensive punch, as he hammered a pair of two-run home runs, but it was not enough and Holmes came away with a 13-7 win.

Cockrell had three hits and Logan had two of his own to assist Newsom on the offensive side.

Driver took his first loss of the season to drop to 3-1 on the year.

In the nightcap versus Holmes, the Eagles of Hinds trailed 5-1 heading into the sixth inning of a seven inning game, but exploded for seven runs over the final two frames to win in a valiant effort.

After Hinds grabbed a run to cut the Holmes lead to 5-2, Craft delivered a bases loaded, two-out, two-strike double down the leftfield line to even the score at 5 apiece.

Owen would then follow up with a double to plate Craft and give Hinds a 6-5 lead, but the Bulldogs responded with one of their own in the bottom of the sixth to tie the contest at 6-6 going into the final inning.

Kyle O'Keefe (Madison) started the seventh inning with a double and would score the go-ahead run just one batter later when Logan's single through the left side plated O'Keefe and gave Hinds a 7-6 lead.

Logan would add an insurance run later in the inning on a passed ball to put Hinds ahead by a score of 8-6, and Koestler would close it out from there.

The redshirt freshman right-hander threw a perfect bottom of the seventh inning to get the victory and move to 7-2 on the campaign.

Aside from the heroics, Cockrell had three hits and O'Keefe had two of his own in Saturday's second game to help the Eagles offense.

Hinds will hit the road again on Wednesday, traveling to Wesson to take on Co-Lin Community College at 3 p.m.
