4/30/2021 11:44:00 AM

A walkoff homer capped off a fifth straight win for the Hinds Eagle baseball team as the regular season gives way to regional playoffs next week.

Freshman catcher Sean Daily, of Vicksburg, smacked a two-run shot over the wall at Joe G. Moss Field to down Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College 10-8 in the 10th inning of play Wednesday. Daily went 3-for-3 for the afternoon. The Eagles, now 21-14 on the year and 18-10 in conference play, put up 19 hits against Gulf Coast pitching, making for a total of 44 hits in the past three games.

Eight pitchers contributed to the win, including freshman right-hander Noah Magee, of Mount Olive, who got the official win with two strikeouts over one inning pitched. Freshman Gentry Tigrett, of Brandon, went 3-for-5 with a stolen base. Freshman Tyree Carr, of Clinton, went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases.

The win came on the heels of two wins Monday over East Mississippi Community College. Clutch pitching led the way in a 10-7 win in Game 1, as freshman right-hander Kendrick Bershell, of Vicksburg, got the Eagles out of a jam with a strikeout in the fourth inning with runners on base. Freshmen Brooks Auger, of Ruston, La., Clark Presley, of Pascagoula, Austin Fugler, of Sontag, and sophomore Matthew Taylor, of Southaven, combined for 14 more strikeouts of Lions batters, with Taylor getting the official save.

Sophomore Pablo Lanzarote, of Venezuela, went 2-for-3 in Game 2 and homered for the 12th time this season, highlighting a 6-3 win. The homer clinched the single-season team record for Lanzarote, who went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs in Game 1. Freshman outfielder Justin Williams, of Madison, went 3-for-3 in Game 2 with a homer of his own and two RBIs. Freshman Holland Townes, of Ridgeland, got the win on the mound, with six strikeouts over 2.2 innings pitched.

The Eagles wrap up the regular season in games today at Pearl River Community College and a single, nine-inning game Monday at home against Copiah-Lincoln Community College. First pitches in today's doubleheader are at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. First pitch on Monday is set for 6 p.m.
