RAYMOND – Former Hinds Community College baseball players Preston Johnson (2019-2020) and Garrett Ramsey (2019-2020) were selected in the 2022 Major League Baseball Draft this week.
Johnson, of Crystal Springs, was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the seventh round and was the 197
th pick. He signed with Mississippi State University out of Hinds and was a part of the Bulldog national title team in 2021. Preston came back to Starkville for the 2022 season and quickly moved into a starting pitching role in the weekend rotation.
Ramsey, of Brandon, was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the sixteenth round and was the 489
th pick. He inked with the University of Southern Mississippi after his time at Hinds and made an impact out of the bullpen for the Golden Eagles. Ramsey was a part of the squad that hosted a NCAA Super Regional in Hattiesburg in 2022.
Both pitchers played a large role in the overall success of Hinds baseball during the 2019 season before the COVID-19 pandemic shortened the 2020 season. In 2019, Johnson pitched 58 innings and led the team with 70 strikeouts. Ramsey led the team in saves with five out of his 25.2 innings pitched.
