MARCH 18, 2015 NJCAA POLL

The Hinds Community College baseball team is ranked No. 1 in the country in the first regular season Division II poll of the season that was released by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) office on Wednesday.

Hinds is now 17-1 overall and 5-1 in the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) after Tuesday's doubleheader sweep over Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.

The Eagles, who were ranked No. 2 in both the NJCAA and Collegiate Baseball preseason polls, defeated MGCC 7-6 in game one before capturing the nightcap, 8-3.

After trailing 4-0 going into fourth inning of game one, the Eagles would chip away at the Gulf Coast lead and tally 12 hits in the ballgame to come away with a one-run victory.

Chase Lunceford (Clinton) led the way by going 3-3 with an RBI, while Hunter Bell (Vicksburg), Marshall Boggs (Cleveland), Matt Jones (Madison) and Jordan Washam (Sterlington, La.) all finished the opener with two hits apiece. Washam finished 2-3 with a solo home run and double.

Trent Driver (Raymond) earned the win on the mound after throwing the seventh and eighth innings and allowing only one earned run and one hit to move to 2-0 on the season.

Austin Sanders (Madison) threw a scoreless ninth inning to earn his sixth save of the season in game one.

Washam was the heavy hitter in game two as well, going 3-4 with a double and a run scored, while Jones and Jonathan Washam (Sterlington, La.) also picked up two hits in the 8-3 victory.

Casey Sutton (Monroe, La.) moved to a perfect 2-0 on the hill after his five-inning, nine strikeout performance that saw him give up six hits, two earned runs and only one walk.

Graham Ahlrich (Madison) and Sanders threw a perfect sixth and seventh inning, respectively, to preserve the Eagles' fifth conference win of the young season.

Hinds will return to action on Saturday, traveling to Baton Rouge (La.) Community College for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
