The No.1 ranked Hinds Community College baseball team claimed the eighth state championship in program history on Saturday, as the Eagles defeated Northwest Community College, 14-3, to claim the 2015 Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) state tournament at Joe G. Moss Field in Raymond.

The Hinds program has now won four championships in 10 seasons under head coach Sam Temple, as the Eagles have claimed MACJC state titles in 2010, 2012 and now 2015, as well as a Region XXIII title in 2014.

Hinds (41-5) also set a school record for wins in the process and will now advance to the Region XXIII tournament starting on Thursday in Eunice, La.

The Eagles will play East Mississippi Community College (29-16) at 3 p.m. on Thursday to open the regional, while Northwest (32-15) will take on host Louisiana State University-Eunice (41-9) in the nightcap at 7 p.m.

Casey Sutton (Monroe, La.) was stellar on the hill for the Eagles on Saturday, going 6.1 innings and allowing eight hits and three runs (all earned) while striking out four Ranger hitters to move to 6-1.

Graham Ahlrich (Madison) got the game's final two outs on an unassisted double play by Chase Lunceford (Clinton) in the contest that ended early due to the 10-run mercy rule.

It was Lunceford who broke the game open in the fifth inning when he drove in two runs on an opposite field double to put the Eagles ahead 4-2.

Hinds would add 10 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to push the lead to 14-2 en route to the blowout victory.

Quade Smith (Brandon) once again led the way offensively for the Eagles, going 3-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.

Casey Echols (Braxton), Matt Jones and Kyle O'Keefe (both of Madison) each added two hits to aid in the 13-hit attack for the top ranked Eagles.

Jonathan Lindsey took the loss on the hill for Northwest, falling to 2-2 on the campaign.

Stuart Chick was the lone Ranger with multiple hits, as his two knocks led the way in the eight-hit output.
