Baseball splits DH to open 2016 season

Trey Jolly (27, L) and Adam Jackson (19)

The 2016 campaign got underway for the Hinds Community College baseball team on Wednesday afternoon in Raymond and after day one, the Eagles sit at 1-1 following a doubleheader split with Bossier Parish (La.) Community College.

Hinds won game one in shutout fashion, 6-0, before falling in the nightcap, 5-4.

Trey Jolly (New Albany) and Adam Jackson (Clinton) combined on a one-hit shutout in the season opener, as Jolly threw four scoreless innings and was followed by Jackson, who had three shutout innings of his own.

Jolly earned the win to move to 1-0 and was helped out by the long ball of the Hinds offense, as Colin Coates (Nesbit) hit a solo home run in his first collegiate at-bat and Chase Cockrell (Bastrop, La.) added a two-run home run later in the  contest for his first home run as a collegian.

Cockrell added a single as well, and was joined by Hunter Bell (Vicksburg), who had two hits in the opener.

Bell led the Hinds offense in game two, as he had two hits yet again, but the meager offensive output was not enough and the Eagles fell by a one-run margin.

Carlisle Koestler (Vicksburg) was solid in his first action in 2016, throwing three innings of one-run baseball to earn the no decision.

Timothy Jordan (Laurel) took the loss on the hill in game two to fall to 0-1 on the campaign.

Quinton Logan (Natchez) and Trent Driver (Raymond) provided scoreless middle relief in the fifth through seventh innings to give the Eagles offense a chance, but one that was not taken advantage of.

Hinds will return to action on Tuesday, traveling to Shreveport, La., for a rematch against the Cavs of Bossier Parish. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
