Eagles use long ball to sweep ICC

Will Craft (16)

The Hinds Community College baseball team hit four home runs against Itawamba Community College in game one and had a comeback victory in game two to sweep the Indians on Sunday afternoon at Smith Wills Stadium in Jackson.

Hinds won game one, 17-6, and squeaked out a 4-3 victory in the nightcap. The two victories, which opened Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) conference play for both teams, moved the Eagles overall record to 9-7 and 2-0 in the MACJC. ICC fell to 12-6 overall and 0-2 in the MACJC.

Will Craft (Hernando) hit a grand slam, while Landry Newsom (Farmerville, La.), Kyle O'Keefe (Madison) and Acy Owen (Brandon) each hit two-run shots to lead the offensive explosion in game one.

Trey Jolly (New Albany) and Jackson Mitchell (Brandon) each had three hits in the opener, and Chase Cockrell (Bastrop, La.), Newsom and O'Keefe picked up two hits as well to contribute to the 18-hit output.

Darrius Wright (Yazoo City) came on in relief in the third inning of the opener and was stellar, throwing six innings and finishing with six strikeouts, one walk and three runs allowed (two earned), while allowing only four hits. He is now 1-1 on the season.

The Eagles fell behind on two separate occasions in game two, but were able to claw from behind and pull out a one-run victory behind clutch hitting from Craft.

The freshman shortstop put Hinds ahead, 4-3, in the bottom of the sixth inning with a two-out single that fell in right center field and drove in what proved to be the go-ahead run.

Trent Driver (Raymond) started the game on the mound and was solid through 3.2 innings, allowing only two runs and one walk, while finishing with two strikeouts.

Ford Axtell (Madison) and Quinton Logan (Natchez) were able to keep the Indians at bay in their relief efforts and would turn it over to Carlisle Koestler (Vicksburg) to deliver the final four outs. The redshirt freshman pitcher was able to do just that, ending the game on a strikeout to earn the win and move his overall record to 3-0 on the season.

Hinds will now head to Meridian Community College on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. showdown with the Eagles of MCC.
