Baseball defeats Panola in game two on Saturday

Trent Driver (28)

The Hinds Community College baseball team used the long ball and the stellar relief pitching of Trent Driver (Raymond) to defeat Panola (Texas) College, 7-2, on Saturday night to split a doubleheader with the Ponies.

Hinds fell in the opener, 3-1, and now sits at 3-3 on the season.

Wil Craft (Hernando), Jackson Mitchell (Brandon) and Landry Newsom (Farmerville, La.) each hit their first collegiate home runs in the second game to help Hinds run away with the victory, with Craft and Mitchell hitting two-run homers and Newsom blasting a solo shot.

Driver entered the contest in the fourth inning in relief of Adam Jackson (Clinton) and was dominant over the final 10 outs, finishing with three strikeouts and not allowing a single hit to stymie the high-powered Panola offense.

Jackson went 3.2 innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and struck out three hitters to earn the win and move to 1-0 on the year.

Craft and Mitchell each had two hits in the nightcap, with Craft finishing with three RBI and Mitchell with two of his own.

The Ponies pitching held the Hinds offense in check in the first game, as Trey Jolly (New Albany) was the lone Eagles hitter to finish with multiple hits. He had a single and double and drove in the team's only run.

Jolly was charged with the tough-luck loss on the mound to fall to 1-1 on the year, despite throwing five innings and allowing only five hits and three runs. The Mississippi State University signee also had five strikeouts to only two walks allowed.

Hinds is set to play Mississippi Delta Community College on Thursday at 12 p.m. at Smith Wills Stadium in Jackson.
