Eagles push DH with ECCC up to Tuesday at Smith Wills

The Hinds Community College Eagles were scheduled to host East Central Community College on Wednesday in Raymond, but due to heavy rains in the forecast, the two teams will now play on Tuesday at Smith Wills Stadium in Jackson.

The two-game set is scheduled for 4 p.m. on the Sprinturf surface at the historic venue in Jackson.

The Eagles are coming off an out-of-conference doubleheader split with Baton Rouge Community College on Good Friday. Hinds won game one, 13-7, before falling in game two, 9-3, and now sit at 11-13 overall and remain 3-5 in the MACJC.

In game one on Friday, the Eagles offense was helped out by Hunter Bell (Vicksburg) and Jackson Mitchell (Brandon), who each had two hits.

The duo was also aided by a three RBI performance from both Chase Cockrell (Bastrop, La.) and Landry Newson (Farmerville, La.), with Cockrell hitting a three-run double and Newsom cranking a three-run bomb.

Trent Driver (Raymond) moved to 2-0 on the season with the win on the mound after throwing four innings and allowing only two runs (one earned) and five hits.

Darrius Wright (Yazoo City) entered in relief midway through the fifth inning and threw the final three frames. He had two strikeouts and gave up two hits, while allowing only one run to cross the plate.

Bell had two hits in the second game and was the only Hinds batter to record multiple hits in the contest.

Ford Axtell (Madison) was charged with the loss in Friday's second game.

The Eagles also traveled to MGM Park in Biloxi on Wednesday, March 23 to take on Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and suffered two heartbreaking losses to the Bulldogs. Hinds lost game one, 8-5, and fell in game two, 6-5.

Quinton Logan (Natchez) had two hits and an RBI in game one versus Gulf Coast and was helped out by Kyle O'Keefe (Madison), who had a hit and two RBI in the opener.

Timothy Jordan (Laurel) took the loss on the mound after starting the contest and going two innings.

Adam Jackson (Clinton) entered in relief in the third inning of game one and was very efficient, tossing 5.1 innings and allowing only two runs, while picking up five strikeouts in the process.

Will Craft (Hernando) and O'Keefe led the way in game two, as the middle infield pair each had two hits, with Craft driving in a pair of runs.

It was not enough, however, as the Eagles could not hold on to a 5-0 lead and fell in extra innings, 6-5.

The loss spoiled an outstanding relief effort by Wright, who threw 3.2 innings and did not allow an earned run. He picked up six strikeouts and scattered only three hits.

Carlisle Koestler (Vicksburg) took the loss in game two and dropped to 3-2 on the season.
